October 13, 1948, Folsom Reservoir Site, 8a.m. to 2 p.m. 20 Sctd. Calm, warm. Blue Heron - 1 American Egret - 1 Mallards - few, and they nested in Blue Ravine, near the S fork, this past season. Wood Ducks - # 3M and 5F at jct. of N and S. Forks of American River. Sharp-shinned Hawk - 1 Cooper Hawk - 3 seen. One persistently chasing flicker, but lost out in oak brush. Redtail Hawk - 7 or more seen. Red-bellied Hawk - one being chased by 5 crows. It lit in cottonwood, and wasn't bothered any more. Marsh Hawk Sparrow Hawks - 5 Valley Quail - many coveys found, wherever I stopped. Perhaps 300 birds seen, and I didn't actually visit even 10% of the available habitat for them. Pheasants - some in vicinity of abandoned orchards and grape fields. Kildeer - 14 seen. Spotted Sandpipers - 1 Mourning Doves - 7 Kingfisher - 2 Red-shafted Flicker - about 65-70 seen all day. California Woodpecker - over 50 seen in oak woodlands. Sierra Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (S. y. daggetti) Black Phoebes - 10-12 seen, all singies. Horned Larks - 3 California Jays - 15-20 seen. Others heard in woodlands and chaparral areas. Western Crows - about 15 seen. Yellow-billed Magpies - just 1 heard. Plain Titmouse - 17 seen. Bush Tits - ran across two flocks of about 25 birds each. Wren-Tits - Pallad - many heard, even in Adenostoma-Arctostaph. chaparral over 1000'. San Joaquin Wren - 6 or 7 seen. Others heard scolding. Canyon Wren - one on oak stub behind vacant cabin, within 25' of pile of tumbled granite boulders. Tail barring plain, rufous, long bill, gray or white breast. Robins - 2 Western Bluebirds - small flocks over the area - at least 250 birds seen. Cedar Waxwing - one flock of 19 Audubon Warblers - in very small groups, and one flock of 40-50 birds working oaks. Western Meadowlarks - about 45-50 birds seen. California Bicolor Redwings - in cattail marsh area between two forks of river. Brewer Blackbirds - 25-30 seen. California Purple Finches - 100's in large flocks in oaks, and open fields. American Goldfinches - few Arkansas Goldfinches - common - about 250-300 seen. Sacramento Towhees - pairs in brush areas everywhere. Brown Towhees - none seen east of the North Fork, all on the Old Auburn Road side. Nevada Savannah Sparrows - about 30 seen altogether. Lark Sparrows - 100's seen, in trees at edge of oak woodlands, on wire lines, and in open pasture and range areas. Nuttall's White-crowned Sparrows - about 100 seen, many being immatures. Not singing. Golden-crowned Sparrows everywhere. several 100 seen. Call notes infrequent. Modesto Song Sparrows - 5 or 6 seen and heard.
