October 11, 1948, Folsom Reservoir area, 830-1130 a.m., 2 Ovc, S2-6, R- , 3/4F- Blue Heron - one along main stem of American River Cooper Hawk - 1 perched in top of 10' shrub in open pasture area, near vineyard. W. Redtail Hawks - several seen. Sparrow Hawks - a couple Valley Quail - at least 4 coveys seen in 1 sq. mi. of area. Up to 12 birds/covey. Mourning Doves - 3 or 4 seen. 5-Flickers - many in the area - all singletons or pairs. In trees, and on ground. California Woodpeckers - up to 6/group. Noisy chattering in live oaks, etc. A California Jay - just 2 on fence beside old Auburn road. Western Crow - 1 or 2 all day California Bush-tits - 2 different flocks of up to 25 birds. Plain Titmouse - a few Pallid Wren-tits - heard just one calling. Western Bluebirds - some in clearings of oak woodland. Large flocks on wire lines, and in open fields. Cedar Waxwings - one flock of 18 birds perched in top of live oak. Phainopeplas - just 2 birds seen. Phoradendron present. Sp? Western Meadowlarks - a few singing from open areas. Brewer Blackbirds - several small flocks, and individuals seen. Calif. Purple Finch - some individuals, and in open field flock of 75-100 birds. Green-backed Goldfinch - small flocks, in brush, and flock of 60-65 birds in open. Sacramento Towhees - most often seen at least 10 feet above ground in brush or trees. California Brown Towhees - along 4 miles of road I saw at least 50 of them in row. small scattered flocks as they flew from the road into the brush of the fence-/ Savannah Sparrows - quite a few seen. Lark Sparrows - many scattered small groups and individuals in open, sparse grasses. One flock of at least 40 of them seen to fly from the ground into a live oak. gambel White-crowned Sparrows - very common in several flocks of up to 25-30 birds. Golden-crowned Sparrows - saw at least 200 today. Heard their plaintive call every- where, as they worked the brush areas of the oak woodland and fence rows. 979
