October 4, 1948, Valley, vicinity of Fallon. 12 noon to 3 p.m. Mostly irrigated.

October 4, 1948, NW of Leetville Junction near Silver State Gun Club, 3:15 p.m.
Good marsh habitat
Mallards common
Pintails - a few
Shovellers - some - no full males
Redheads - several immatures or molting adults seen.
Vultures - none seen all day, in Nevada.
Coots very common
Least Sandpipers - 10 or 12 seen in small flock
Ruddy Ducks - seven al
Northern Phalaropes - 7 in winter plumage. Black bill and feet.
Black "tear" over eye area. In small pool at edge of hiway, and allowed me
to approach within 10 or 12 feet of them. Using 7X glasses, they were big!
When flushed they would fly only about 40 or 50 feet.
Avocets common
Barn Swallow - just 1
Yellow-headed Blackbirds - a few in marsh area with
Redwings.
October 4, 1948, Fernley Sink, NW of Fernley, Nevada, on U.S. 40. 4-5 p.m.
Pied-billed Grebe Redheads - few Least Sandpipers
Farallon Cormorants Marsh Hawk F Horned Larks
Mallards very common - 300& Coots common Ravens - 4 pr. to Lovelock
Pintails - 150& Willet - two in short marsh area.
Green-winged Teal - 250-300 Yellow-legs Brewer Blackbirds
October 5, 1948, Lovelock, Nevada, and irrigated area around. All day.
Marsh Hawk - a couple
Valley Quail - several small coveys
Pheasants - quite a few, not common
Killdeer
Mourning Dove - 2 pair
Burrowing Owl in dike along Humboldt R.
Flicker
Horned Larks - 1000's in sparse veg. areas S.
Crows - flight of 260& to stockyard and garbage dump before sunup, west of town.
Saw afternoon gathering flock of over 500 8 mi. SE of town, at 5 p.m. Brewer's too
Ravens - several pairs.
Mountain Bluebirds - 3 along Humboldt River, in open vegetation area.
Meadowlarks
Brewer Blackbirds - 3 bunches flew over totaling 55. Over 150 with crow p.m. flock.
White-crowned Sparrows - in greasewood area west of town.
October 6, 1948, Floriston to Truckee, Nevada Co, Calif. 9:30-9:45 a.m.
Stellar Jays Black-billed Magpie Clarke Nutcracker in rimrock areas.
Oct. 6, 1948, NE of Auburn - "Sleepy Hollow", 11 a.m. Placer Co.
