MCFADDEN'S SWAMP, BRUCE, BENTON CO., OREGON by David B. Marshall October 3, 1948 09:00 - 12:00 Weather overcast with intermittent rains. Water conditions: Water low. Main pond of swamp only mud in many places. Coverage: 100 % for all ponds and channels, but not Muddy Cr. Blue Heron - one flew over. Mallard - One was flushed from the main pond, and two males and two females dropped out of a flock of 17 unidentified ducks and landed in the swamp. Sharp-shinned Hawk - One in the [illegible] ash at the east side of the main pond. Red-tail - one was perched on a telephone pole along the railroad track. Around this bird on the wires were 150 goldfinches apparently unconcerned about the hawks presence. Sparrow Hawk - One heard rattling. Ring-necked Pheasant - One at the northeast corner of the main pond seen by Betty. Coct - two next to the bridge. Killdeer - About 20 in the area, mostly in the main pond. Wilson's Snipe - At least on dozen were flushed, all in the main pond. Greater Yellow-legs - A flock of 17 was present with the killdeers on the main pond. Mourning Dove - One on the wire next to the Red-tail and another by the cabin. Flicker - Four seen all together. Steller's Jay - one calling from the ash and oak among Muddy Cr. Crow - At least 15 in the area. Oregon Chickadee - Flocks ranging from two to four individuals seen three times. Seattle Wren - One on two occasions. Tule Wren - Only one and singing. Robin - Nine in the grass between Muddy Cr. and the swamp south of the road. Pipit - At least 20 in the area, mostly in the Mud in the Main pond. Cedar Waxwing - A flock of four and a floc of 10 flew over. Audubon War ler - About seven in the dead ash on the east side of th main pond. Yellow-throat - heard calling twice. Western Meadowlark - two heard singing. Red-wing - At least 100 and perhaps 150 in the area mostly in the dead ash on the east side of the main pond. Brewer's Blackbird - One flew over. Evening Grosbeak - One or more heard calling from the ash among Muddy Cr. Purple Finch - A flock of two and a flock of four. Goldfinch - One flock of 150 on the wires beside the RR tracks. Oregon Towhee-one Oregon Junco - One with chickadees. Song Sparrow - A total of 15 tabulated. CORVALLIS, 27th and Orchard. Oct 3, 48 Flock of at least 100 pipits flew over.
