October 2, 1948, From Suisun to Grizzly Island Ferry, Solano Co. 915-945. White-tailed Kites - pair flying over tule area below the hiway, as well as across the highway over near barren hillsides south of the hiway. Watched a black- bird chasing one, and later saw them bantering with each other. Also watched them hover like the sparrow hawk. Tree Swallows - seemed to be quite a southward flight across this strip. Oct. 2, 1948, Grizzly Island Ferry, Griz. Is to Griz. Is. Land Co, 945-10 a.m. Ruddy Ducks - one group of 5 and also a raft of 19 of them, seen in a.m., and again in p.m. on way out. Horned Owl - flying along side of eucalyptus-lined lane, pursued by Sparrow Hawk. Say's Phoebe - pair about Griz. Is. Land Co. buildings. Black Phoebe - seen in p.m. Violet-green Swallows - a few in with a couple of 100 tree swallows. Audubon Warblers - about 25 in one flock flew into tules. Savannah Sparrows - quite common. Oct. 2, 1948, Suisun State Refuge, Joyce Island, Solano Co., 10-2 p.m. Few small eucalyptus groves, mostly tule marsh, considerable open water pools. Otters, many racoons, mink common, also weasels, few skunks. They took 58 coon off the refuge last year. Pied-billed Grebe White Pelicans - l2& - many others seen flying and circling high over other areas. Blue Herons - several seen. American Egrets - these or snowys had nests from 30-75 feet up in eucalyptus groves. Snowy Egrets - more of these that Americans. Mallards very common Baldpates - about 150 seen Pintails - several 100 seen. Gadwalls - about 50 seen Green-winged Teal - in very small scattered groups. Blue-winged Teal - just one seen Cinnamon Shovellers - few full adults, but many molting adults or immatures present. Ruddy Ducks - about 15 seen in slough Vulture - 1 over area White-tailed Kite - 1 hovering high over tules, but slowly lowering itself, while still hovering. Could have been one of pair seen along hiway in a.m., for it is only a mile or so away from the refuge. Virginia Rails - several heard in refuge area. Sora Rail - heard in just one area, a couple of individuals, tho. Yellow Rail - Gordy and I heard a new call from the tules, and checked the call descriptions in Peterson's - this species is the one that fits it exactly ! We did not get to see any of them because of the dense Scirpus growth. How- ever I would say there were at least 10 or so in the area. Coots - 100's Killdeer - several Dowitchers - 100's a week ago - only 12 seen today Western Sandpipers - 2 Yellowlegs- Greater - 4 Avocets - at least 15 seen. California Gulls common Ring-billed Gulls - 2 Western Gulls - 1 Flicker - several Black Phoebe about headquarter buildings Tree Swallows - several W. Crow California Shrike Western Yellowthroats, W. Meadowlarks, Brewer and Calif. Bicolor Redwings, Green- backed Goldfinches - 2 ; white-crowned sparrows - several adults and immatures. Suisun, and Rusty Song Sparrows both present.
