September 28, 1948, Bear Dam Site, ENE of Planada, Merced Co., in Mariposa Co. 1715-1815 Blue Heron - 1 W. Redtail Hawk - a couple seen. Nest in Populus fremontii at 35' or so. Isolated tree Valley Quail - 1 flushed from small brush thicket along very dry creek Mourning Dove - 1 seen, Hunting recently in this creek bed. Flicker, Monterey Red-shafted Say's Phoebe - a couple seen. Horned Larks very common Calif. Plain Titmouse - a pair in this dry canyon working isolated Populus fremontii, and brush. W. Rock Wren - one seen and heard in area of folded rock outcrop. W. Meadowlarks - very common W Vesper Sparrows - several seen. September 29, 1948, Burns Dam Site, NE of Planada in Merced Co., at edge of foothills. 9-1015 a.m. PDST. Low rolling hills, range grasses richer. Scattered willows and cattails, etc. along dry creek bed Scattered potholes. Blue Heron W Redtail Hawks - a pair perched on a dead poplar. Mourning Doves - 2 or 3 flushed from small willow tree clump. Flicker, Monterey Red-shafted Black Phoebe - a pair in vicinity of small cliff near pothole containing water. Say's Phoebe - a couple seen. Horned Larks - common, very W. Meadowlarks very common in range area, especially along roads and fences. Brewer Blackbirds - 2 Purple Finches - adults and immatures - 4 seen. V. Vesper Sparrows - several Savannah Sparrows - several Lark Sparrows - at least 3 seen, 2 perched in low willow. September 29, 1948, Planada-Lingard, Merced Co (U.S. /(99)). 1030-1050 PDST. Mockingbird - immature perched on fence post. W Robins - a half dozen seen. These were the only ones in the whole area. Mtn. White-crowned Sparrows - several seen with the Mockingbird. September 29, 1948. Lingard-10 mi. SW of Merced, Merced Co. 1050-1130 PDST. Redtail Hawks - several adults and immatures seen. Golden Eagles - 1 2nd year immature perched on fence post. Another found dead beside the gravel road 300 yards from the live one. The dead one was pretty light, with all flesh, etc. cleaned off, and bones quite dry. I'd estimate it had been dead at least a week or 10 days. Mate still staying close?? dry. Sparrow Hawks - very common Burrowing Owl - perched on very low knoll in near-barren over-grazed/range land. California Shrikes very common all along the roads and fences. W. Meadowlarks very common along the roads and fences. September 29, 1948, From 10 mi. SW of Merced to Merced, via 140, 1130-1230 PDST Dampier than above area, irrigated, etc. White Pelicans - 150& seen. We saw about 40 of them perched on the ground with American Egrets, but these took off and joined a larger flight that passed over. Blue Herons - 7 American Egrets - 75 or so, most perched on ground with Pelicans and Blue Herons. Sparrow Hawks common Coot - one seen on irrigation overflow pool. Killdeer - several
