MCFADDEN'S SWAMP AT BRUCE, Sept. 25, 48. 14:00 to 15:15 DAM Area Visited - Swamp south of dike road only Blue Heron - One flew out of the far south pond. Turkey Vulture - Four or 5 were seen. Belted Kingfisher - First one flew over us. It was later seen flying with another. Red-shafted Flicker - One on the island. Horned Lark - about four flew over and landed in a field. Violet-Green Swallow - About two flocks of swallows were seen working over the area. They numbered about 75 each. Only species identified among them was violet-green. Yellow-throat - 2 heard. Bushtit - Heard but not seen in the Spirea across the stream running through the swamp. Tule Wren - Two located at the same place singing from Spirea. Red-wing - One female Purple Finch - Two or three were located. Goldfinch - A small flock present around the barn at the swamp. Up the road towards the hill a flock of about 50 were seen. Oregon Towhee - In the rose beside the barn. Song Sparrow - TWo Three Water very low. Only main channels with water and small section of the swamp at the southwest corner of the island. Much of swamp vegetation turned brown. October 15, 48. 16:30 - 17:30 Weather - clear Area visited - Walked along west side of main pond north of road. a very hurried trip. Baldpate - 40 were present in a compact flock. These birds were coming out of fall plumage. They did not call even when flushed. Ring-necked Pheasant - 8 flew in around the cabin. Wilson's Snipe several Crow - heard calling. Tule Wren One seen Pipit - Several were seen. Many more were undoubtedly present. Red-sing - At least 100 seen Song Sparrow - one.
