September 19, 1948. Natoma, below Folsom, 1/2 mile west. 10300-1110 PDST. Calm, warm. Vultures very common over the foothill areas. Redtail Hawk immature. Nest at 30' in live oak. Flicker - calling and later seen. Just one California Woodpecker - pair chattering noisely on telephone pole. Others seen on these poles. Black Phoebe calling from snag over small creek, in open. Later flew high with "butterfly" type of flight,/then dropping into shade of upper foliage of alder. and called. California Plain Titmouse - several working, with Towhees at heights of 25' in the live oaks. Actually pecking at t e wood. Pallid Wren-tit - heard two different ones calling. San Joaquin Wren - immature scolded me, and approached close when I squeeked. Cassin Vireo - two immatures seen. Were very curious of me. Golden-Pileolated Warbler (W. p. chryseolus). Working live oak and alder, in denser portion of swale. Western Tanager - just one heard, and later seen. House Finch - small flock of 8 i n tree tops, calling frequently. Green-backed Goldfinches - adults and immatures seen. Sacramento Towhee - respond instantly to squeeking. They were working the live oaks with the Plain Titmouse. Sept. 20, 1948. Sept. 25, 1948. North Sacramento, at Macroni Ave, 730 a.m. PDST Yellow-billed Magpies - 3 seen. Near live oaks Sept. 25, 1948 Roseville to Lincoln - 0745-0750 a.m. PDST Snowy Egret Yellow-billed Magpies - two or three separate bunches seen Near live oaks W. Meadowlark - 8 or 9/ mile Brewer Blackbirds - about 150/mile in singles to flocks of 25-30. Most in pairs. September 25, 1948. Wheatland to Maryville. 0810-0820 PDST Sparrow Hawk - 2 or 3 seen on wire lines and over fields Yellow-billed Magpies - common - 7-7 seen Near live oaks. W. Crows - 2 or 3 seen Audubon Warblers - flocks of 15-20 in small bushes at one point along the hiway. Green-backed Goldfinches - 15 -20 at edge of hiway. September 25, 1948, Pennington, 3 p.m. PDS T California Woodpecker - 2 or 3 in live oak woodland Green-backed Goldfinches - several Lark Sparrows - several seen flying, and one perched on wire line by the road. Chest spot barely developed. Head pattern fairly well-developed. Immature.
