Mallards - few Coots - several - adults and feeding one downy young about 4" long. Its bill orangish. Another - near adult size young, gray plumage and with gray bill. California Gulls Brewer Blackbirds. English Sparrows. September 5, 1948. Griffith Park, L. A. 10-1 p.m. Clear and warm, calm. California Quail - several calling Mourning Doves - few Flicker - c alling and I saw 2 D. p. turati. Willow Woodpec ker (Downy) heavy wing spotting, red nape mark. Called. California (A. C. californica) Jay - several seen and heard. Feeding on cherry fruits. Bush Tits - small flock of 10 or 15 of them. Wren Tits - calls quite similar to those of coastal Oregon butlighter colored. Quite common in the chaparral-covered slopes. Plain Titmouse - 2 seen. obscure gray, crest, no other prominent markings. California Thrashers - 2 or 3 seen. Sept 1948? Warbling Vireo - 3 seen in trees English Sparrows House Finches common Black-headed Grosbeaks - about 12 or 15 immatures seen high in trees. San Diego Towhee - one heard and seen. California Brown Towhee - 3 or 4 seen. Tame. Mostly on ground under brush. Curious. Sept. 5, 1948. LaBrea Tar Pits - Wilshire Blvd. 4 p.m. Killdeer - 3 pair Mourning Doves - 8 to 10 pairs Black-chinned Hummingbird - small - blue-black throat - greenish body. bronze on wings. California Jay - several. California Mockingbirds - 2 or 3 seen. Brewer Blackbird House Finches - 2 or 3 small flocks. Sept. 6, 1948 Fresno-Madera (20 miles) 0530-0600. Before sunrise.
