August 28, 1948, Silverton to Silver Creek Falls Park, 1130-1200. Clear calm. Vultures over most of the ridges, circling up on thermals. August 28, 1948, SE 82, south of Foster Road, Portland, Oregon. 1030 pm. Dowitchers - a flight of unknown numbers circled low over the open theatre area. August 30, 1948, 12-mile Swamp south of Corvallis, Benton Co., Oregon. 1620-1630 PST Vultures common Killdeer Violet-green Swallows - quite a few, many immatures on wire lines. Barn Swallows - several adult pairs over swamp area. Nest found torn from wall, broken in two, and 3 young, dead over a week. partially eaten and strewn within 20 foot circle of nest site. Primarily quills to 1" long. sheathed yet. None opened . Tule Wrens - few seen, and only fragmentary songs heard, none being full. Redwings flocked - not over 75-100 in the area. No typical calling, just short notes. CALIFORNIA: --Damn it!!-- August 31, 1948 Shasta Dam to Redding - 0630-0700. Clear and calm. Mourning Doves - several seen Flicker - one called Lewis Woodpeckers - one bunch of 6 flew from one clump of trees to another. 2 adults. Oregon Chickadee - few heard and seen. Bush Tits - 3 seen California Shrike - perched on wire lines. One on bridge feeding on carrion. Meadowlark - several on fences and wire lines. August 31, 1948 Corning - Orlando 0900-0915. American Egrets - 7 at edge of pool in field. Cooper Hawk over olive orchard area. Mourning Doves - quite a few flying and on wire lines. Burrowing Owl - one perched on 15' crossarm of telephone pole. Pale color. California Woodpecker - 2 or 3 seen on poles and trees., or flying. Western Kingbird - 2 different one within one mile, on wire lines. Barn Swallows - flying in pairs close to hiway culvert - probably irrigation channel. California Shrike - several seen. Meadowlarks Brewer Blackbirds House Finches - group of 7 on wire line within 10 feet of each other.
