Had dark gray head Little Flycatcher Wood Pewee - several seen and heard Olive-sided Flycatchers - 6-7 in family group. perch on snag tops. 2 would chase each other viciously and constantly. Stellar Jay - a couple calling, and one feeding on hazel nuts Oregon Chickadees - small groups working brush and trees. Red-breasted Nuthatch - at least half a dozen around Russet-backed Thrush - adults calling, and tailless young, 1/3 grown seen. Golden-growned Kinglets - working fir forest areas. Ruby-crowned Kinglets - immature or female in maple-brush areas. Cassin Vireo - several calling Warbling Vireo - 2 or 3 seen. Others singing beautifully. MacGillivray Warbler - in hazel-maple brush in ash woods Black-throated Gray Warbler - a few adults and many immatures in tree-tops, and brush. Western Tanager - one heard Juncos - 4 or 5 in one flock at edge of copice fir, on pasture ground. Fox Sparrows along river, in brush. Same, in brush-pasture area. 0815-0830. Kingfishers - a pair flew up the river, calling. Gairdner Woodpecker - wor king willow in dried-up pond area. Western Flycatcher - two were seen in Cascara tree. Yellowing underparts distinct. Wood Pewees - a couple in service-berry thicket Robins - several W. Bluebirds - 2 flew over Cedar Waxwings - pair of immatures perched on wire line. Oregon Towhee Song Sparrows. Along hiway back to Woodburn - 0730-0745. Clear and calm. Sparrow Hawk on pole Killdeer- in pasture area near small creek. Mourning Dove - just one flying over Horned Lark - at edge of road Brewer Blackbirds - pair on wire line Lazuli Bunting - 3 different immatures, or molting adults seen on wire lines. Vesper Sparrows on wire fence. Savannah Sparrow on ground at edge of road. August 22, 1948, 521 Hayes St. Woodburn. 0730-0830 PST. R last nite, now 15 Ovc. Flicker feeding on ground in our backyard along with Wood Pewee on wire line and Robins - about 15, most, if not all immatures. Some showed spotty albinism, and others showed coloration mutation - like tan, instead of gray on head. Feeding. Yellow Warbler - a couple in walnut tree Black-throated Gray Warbler - at least 4 in our backyard. One feeding consistently on the ground in wet grass of backyard. One preened 5 minutes-in cypress. First the body, then the tail, and then the wings. Oregon Chickadees - small flock of 7 or 8 moved through Western Tanagers - at least 8 or 10 have been around the yard, and two females were here this a.m. Others in neighbors walnuts and one cherry and two where they were feeding on the last remaining fruits. Others feeding in tops of 100' birch. Have a singular note, rather musical, partially similar to the R-b. Thrush. August 22, 1948, Needy-Mollala area. 1600-1715. Lewis Woodpecker - one seen flying across the road White-crowned Sparrow - one flew from edge of road to brush. lst seen in long while.
