DAVIS LAKE, 7 MILES N. OF WILLAMETTE PASS HWY July 27, 1948 (730 p.m.) to July 28 (830 a.m.). Lev. 4585' Eared Grebes - 11 of them on west side White Pelican - 1 on marshy bar at northwest corner of lake. Canada Geese came in at dusk. 15 on bar with gulls this a.m. And 30 more seen on W side, and 6 on N side in the a.m. Cackling Geese - 14 seen Barrow's Golden-eyes - 2 seen Osprey - flying with moving flock of 150+ gulls in the evening. In the a.m. I watched one dive under the surface from a height of 125' and come up with a 9" fish, and in a period of 5 minutes it had circled to well over 2000' and over 4 miles to the NE. Sparrow Hawk Coots Mule Deer California or Ring-billed Gulls - 100's flying to W across S end accompanied by an osprey in the evening. Pacific Nighthawk lit on ground in my camp area. Flicker Harris Woodpecker Wood Pewee Little Flycatchers come on Tree Swallows Barn Swallows Cliff Swallows Purple Martins - a half-dozen immatures or females flying over the south end of the lake this a.m. with the swallows. Steller Jays common Clarke Nutcrackers - 4 in pines along the lake edge on the west side. Mountain Chickadees Red-breasted Nuthatches Pigmy Nuthatches in yellow pine. Robin Mountain Bluebirds in open meadow areas. Warbling Vireos Audubon Warblers Brewer Blackbirds Western Tanagers singing and calling Pine Siskins Crossbills - young ones, early in a.m. Savannah Sparrows Chipping Sparrows July 28, 1948. Cultus Lake, 0945. Creeper singing Crossbills - 25 in one flock that flew over. July 28, 1948. Deschutes Bridge -- 1010-1030 El. 4625'. Mountain Chickadees Warbling Vireo Audubon Warbler Brewer Blackbirds - 6 of them. Chipping Sparrows Song Sparrows . July 28, 1948. Little Lava Lake, 1045.
