July 27, 1948. NW area of Klamath Marshes, in combination with pine, and fir forests of adjacent hillsides. 0800-0900. NE 10-15, cold, 30 Ovc. Redtail Hawk Sparrow Hawk - nest in dead yellow pine in small clearing - hole at 50 feet on east. Adult and one young at nest. A second nest in yellow pine at edge of forest. Hole 90& feet up on south. 2 young birds nearby. Adult fed one. Only young rested near t Flicker Red-ripped Sa, sucker Hairy Woodpecker Wood Pewee - nest saddled on SE edge of dead white fir in open. 1¼" deep and 2½" diameter outside. Fine plant material and spider webbing. 1k feet above ground. Parents staying nearby. Nest sloping. Pine grass lined. This dead white fir in a small clearing near the edge of the marsh. Little Flycatcher Steller Jay Mountain Chickadees House Wren Robin Ruby-crowned Kinglets Lutescent Warbler Pacific Yellow-throats - different song than the Will. Val. form. Not so rollicking. Crossbill - small flock flew over the forest. Juncos. fox Sparrow singing Song Sparrow in brush at edge of marsh. July 27, 1948, Klamath Marshes near Rocky Point, 0945-1230. dweek Eared Grebes - several seen. - 1 heavily tinged chestnut on side and much larger. Holboell's Grebe -> Could possibly have been a Holboel's grebe. OK'd by Marshall Fane - 9-7-48 Western Grebe - several seen Red-billed Grebe White Pelicans Cormorants - pair swimming in marsh area. Blue Heron American Egret - just one seen. Common Canada Geese - 9 seen. Mallard and downy young Virginia Rail Coot. Ring-billed Gulls - 2 of them. Black Tern - in one area they were particularly common, screaming as they flew low over the marsh vegetation. Wood Pewees - many Olivesided Flycatcher Rough-winged Swallows - a few Tern Swallows Magpies - 2 flying over marsh area - others seen farther south. Robin Cassin Vireo Warbling Vireo in brush near water. MacGillivray Warbler Yellow Warbler Yellowthroats Heawings-Tri-colored Brewer Blackbirds Bullock's Oriole in tree at Rocky Point boat dock. W. Tanager. Purple Finch (Cassin's ??) Chipping Sparrow Song Sparrow.
