Old nest hole on S. side just 4' above the new nest. Snag in clearing near quarry, with other scattered snags. No low shrubs present. Clarke Nutcracker Mountain Chickadee - nest on SW side of 14" 15' Mtn. Hemlock stub at 11 feet. Both parents feeding nest. Young chattered when parent entered. Robins and fledgling - many adults. Townsend Solitaire singing. Golden-crowned Kinglets Hermit Warbler - a couple Western Tanager Cassin Purple Finch Pine Siskins Juncos. July 27, 1948, Annie Springs 0800-1000, 6000' elev. Vulture Goshawk chased golden-mantled ground squirrel at 1020 Olive-sided Flycatcher Mountain Chickadee Red-breasted Nuthatch Creeper singing in old dense hemlock clump Robin Golden-crowned Kinglet Western Tanager. Pine Siskins Juncos Lincoln Sparrow came within 5 feet of me while I was stalking marmot. Stellar Jay July 26, 1948, Crater Lake, Rim, near village. 1130-1230. 7100' elev. Nutcrackers Brewer blackbirds - 1 male and 5 females flying from one clump of white-barked pine to another. There was a very strong wind from the west during this time, carrying clouds of pollen over the rim, and dropping it into the lake. It could have brought these birds up here. Pine Siskins Juncos.
