Sand Creek, near Ranger Station at junction of Kerr Notch, Bend Road, and E. Gate road at 5900'. 1505-1715. With Dr. Lon. S. Farner, and Lavia B. Marshall. Western Flycatcher - located pair of adults making feeding runs to nest. Some- times infrequently, others right after each other! quite yellowish under- parts - no bigger than Little Flycatcher. The nest was on SE side of Sand Creek canyon, 50' from canyon bottom, under "springy" overhanging bank with 8' of bare sandstone, wet and mossy, below it. Scattered Mimulus guttatus on this slope. Nest directly under 4" overhang. Wet site. Young in nest. Number? - couldn't be determined. A new nesting record for the park area. Steller Jay scolding Ruby-crowned Kinglet - I spotted one carrying a "Lycanae" butterfly into a clump of Pinus contorta. This was on the west side of Sand Creek at top of rim about 200' above canyon bottom. After much beating around the bush, it did go to the nest in one tree at the top of a NE facing bluff. The nest was on the open east side of tree, 10' up in dense cluster of twigs at the end of a down-hanging limb. Nest bound into 8 different twigs for support. Nest lined with feathers chiefly breast of Flicker (containing spot), and some yellow and red chest and neck feathers of Western Tanager. Nest bottom had 1" depth of inside part almost all W. Tanger feathers - yellow. Outside of nest of fine decayed vegetation and lichens. Some feathers and some clump-bristled composite fruits. Inside diameter 2 1/2" Outside 3 1/2" to 3 3/4" Inside depth 1 1/2" Outside 4&" 6 young flew as I touched the nest - 1 dud egg remained. Young flew well, some high and over 50 feet out.
