Clear, calm Vultures - none Sparrow Hawk Pheasants - 3 immatures in 6' tree Gairner Wood pecker Violet-green Swallow Barn Swallow - 4 Cliff Swallows 8 Robin Bluebird Cedar Wax wing Redwings Brewer Blackbirds Lazuli Bunting Pine Siskins W illow Goldfinch July 16, 1948 - l2-mile Swamp - 0815-0915, Clear and calm Pied-billed Crebe Blue Heron Mallard Wood Duck - 3 or 5 immatures Bobwhites Virginia Rails - 2 diff. calling Mourning Doves Oregon Chickad ee Robin Cassin Vireo - immature pale wing bars and eye-ring. Yellow on breast sides - giving off-tone churrs and chat-like "chucks". Pacific Yellowthroats Redwing Blackbirds - mostly immatures Brewer Blackbirds Purple Finch Lazuli Bunting Amer. Goldfinch Song Sparrow. July 16, 1948 - l2-mile Swamp to Cheshire - 0920-0950. Vulture - 1 seen at 0920 - 1st of the day. Cedar Wax wing Vesper Sparrow Rufous Hummingbird English Sparrow Crow Lazuli Bunting Bussel-backed Thrush Towhees July 16, 1948 - Fern Ridge Reser voir, Lane Co. 0950-1630, 83°F Pied-billed Grebe White Pelicans - 30-40 Blue Heron Green Heron Bittern Mallards and 4 young, also nest on low island - very little down - 8 eggs, at base of rose bush. Nest about 3½" deep and 7" across. "Blue-winged"Teal - 9 seen on July 15th by Ben Pruitt. Hooded Merganser - pair in cattails at south end. Vulture Sparrow Hawk Pheasant Virginia Fail flushed Coots - plenty - young also, calling Wilson Snipe - a half dozen or so. Couldn't find nest. Killdeer Dowitchers - 6 and 15 Greater Yellow-legs - 2 Least S andpiper s - 15-20 (58 o n July 15th by Ben Pruitt) Mourning Loves common Rufous Hummingbird Kingfisher Flicker Little Flycatcher Horned Larks singing up to 50' in air - one d ropped over 30' vertically to road OVER OVER
