Northern Phalarope - a single male in full plumage (without rufous across throat) on the largest of the small ponds among the dunes. Got within 15' of it several times, as it was very tame. It was well, flying O.K. California Gull - common Glaucous-winged Gull - a couple seen. Flicker Tree Swallows Barn Swallows over pond areas Robin on dune White-crown Sparrows on the dune areas. Willow Goldfinches here and there, too. May 30, 1948, Spruce-Pine-Rhododendron dunes and woods S. of Yaquina Bay Channel 6 to 7 p.m. Warm, calm. Band-tailed Pigeons in small flocks - common Mourning Doves calling - just 3 or 4 of them. Rufous Hummingbirds around the many flowering shrubs and herbs this evening Flicker calling from top of pine and spruce trees Little Flycatchers - a couple W. Wood Pewee - 1 heard and later seen. Violet-green Swallow in clearing and at edge of woods Raven - 4 flew over to SE and inland Chestnut-backed Chickadee - a few heard and seen. Wren-Tits - 2 or 3 calling. Robin Russet-backed Thrushes calling Golden-crowned Kinglets Lutescent Warblers Yellow Warblers Black Cro-headed Grosbeaks calling Purple Finches singing Pine Siskins still flocked Oregon Towhees Song Sparrows common May 31, 1948, Yaquina Head, Agate Beach, and Hidden Lake, (N. of Waldport) - cloudy, calm, and warm. Common Loon - 2 seen Red-throated Loons - 4 together Western Grebes - flocks of up to 15 feeding together Farallon Cormorants - common on off-shore rocks Baird's Cormorant - just a couple seen. - patches showed plainly. White-winged Scoters - adults and immatures. Surf Scoters Cooper Hawk - over beach area. Killdeers here and there California Murres - on off-shore rocks and swimming in ocean Pigeon Guillemot - common around Yaquina Head - some courting antics on the rocks. Well-paired, females a lighter sooty color that shiny, dark males. Many feeding offshore. Band-tailed Pigeons - flying around the woods areas.
