April 21st - 2 people following! McFADDEN'S SWAMP, 12 Miles S. Corvallis, Benton Co., Ore. April 23, 1948 14:00 to 17:30 Weather: Overcast, 60 deg. Observers: T.H. McAllister, D.B. Marshall Canada Goose - Flushed about 50 of them from the far south pond and then failed to see anymore. Mallard - Saw perhaps 20, mostly paired. Pintail - About 30 pairs. Green-winged Teal - Perhaps 500 in all, mostly in the north field. Shoveller - About 100 in all, mostly paired. Buffle-head - One female in the channel running between the two south ponds. Turkey Vulture Marsh Hawk - one male Ring-necked Pheasant Virginia Rail - Heard one in the heavy growth between the two south ponds. Later saw one where we cross the fence in going along the east edge of the main pond. American Coot - about 60 Killdeer - the one bird still on the road. Wilson's Snipe - Walked across the north field and didn't flush a snipe, but flushed one along the main pond. Western Solitary Sandpiper - Tom spotted this one between a yellowlegs and a Killdeer in a new growth of spike-rush. We watched for some time and got fairly close to it. It teetered for us once, and when it finally flew off it showed us plainly its lengthwise stripes down its tail with black and white cross-bars. It also gave its call-note, which sounded like a spotted sandpiper only higher. Greater Yellow-legs - There were around 25 in the area with a flock of at least 20 in the north field. Mourning Dove - One cooing along the east edge of the main pond from the ash. Violet-Green Swallow Tree Swallow Rough-winged Swallow - Saw and heard at least one at the south end. There were probably more of them. Cliff Swallow Crows Oregon Chickadee Bushtits - In the ash and spirea along the board walk. Seattle Wren Tule Wren Robins XXXXX Cassin's Vireo - Calling along Muddy Creek across from the north field. Yellow-throats Red-wings Oregon Towhee White-crowned Sparrows Golden-crowned Sparrow - One or two in the rose thicked back of the barn. Song Sparrows Chipping Sparrows - Several in the ash at the south end. D.B. Marshall
