April 21, 1948, Owl Creek, Linn Co., 2 miles E of Corvallis. 4 p.m. Mallard ??? nest on pile of dry grass left on some branches by high water. Nest about 15" over water on horizontal snag that had two connections to the north bank of the creek. Cavity about 8" - 9" in diameter, and about 2½-3" deep. Quite a bit of small pieces of down lining and around the nest. The nest had been raided, probably by a coon(or skunk), and the empty eggs (6 or 7) were in a pile on the grass about a foot from the nest cavity. The eggs were a greenish white, averaging 2¼" x 1 5/8" in size. They were all opened on the side, near one end, and a few at both ends. Claw tip marks could be seen inside the shell. Screech Owl - one calling in south end. 1/2 mile of the swamp. Tule Wren - one singing just one in south end.
