4-17-48 = Mt. Tabor Park, Portland - Cassin's Vireo April 18, 1948, Avery Park, Corvallis, 0910-0950, 20 Brkn, calm, warm. Pheasant - crowing in the woods Flicker - just one heard. Gairdner Woodpecker - one in old-growth fir area, working on maple. Red-breasted Sapsucker. - one working horizontal maple limb, in open area. Violet-green Swallow - many over the tree tops. Winter Wrens - singing here and there. One pair singing and shivering wings at same time, on pile of brush just 5 feet from me. Robin - a few - Varied Thrush - just one seen about 30 feet up in maple at edge of fir woods. Russet-backed Thrush - last year's nest at 8½ feet in maple in open old growth fir, quite a brush thicket just below the nest tree. Audubon Warblers - several pairs seen, but no nests found. Evening Grosbeaks - a few flew over Purple Finches - singing here and there. Pine Siskins - a few in fir-maple area. Oregon Towhees - pretty quiet Oregon Juncos - quite a few in woods and brush, and open areas. Chipping Sparrows - several heard, and others in top perches of ash trees. Song Sparrows singing April 18, 1948, Government Island, Columbia R., near Portland (Dave Marshall) Redtail Hawk - nest at 90' in large cottonwood at southeast edge of grove. Adults nearby, scolding. Droppings on ground under nest. Killdeer - Found adult bird scolding and feigning. Then Tom McC. found a young one lying flat, motionless and well camouflaged in the sod. After considerable looking we found two more young ones in same manner. All within 8' radius. Walked away and watched 4 young ones slowly make their way to breast feathers of adult. Yellow tip on end of bill Rough-winged Swallow seen Cliff Swallows - lots of them gathering mud and starting nests on buildings. Savannah Sparrows singing. April 19, 1948, Avery Park, Corvallis. Cassin's Vireo Silver -> Pheasant nest on W base of D. Fir in brush and grass. 1 pheasant egg and 8 of her own. Apr. 19, 1948 - Anthony Green Heron or stump at edge of Owl Creek, Lime Co., 2 miles E of Corvallis.
