March 9, 1948 Corvallis - LMville Swamp, 1310-1330, SO M. Cool. B.M. Mallards - 12 Pintail McFADDEN'S SWAMP AT BRUCE STATION, BENTON CO., ORE. March Hawk - 1 Marsh Rail - 1 March 7, 1948 14:30 to 17:00 Weather: High clouds, warm Blue Heron - 1 flew up out of the south swamp. Canada Goose - 2,000 to 3,000 in the area Mallard - probably around 400 altogether in scattered flocks. Pintail - Not as many as yesterday, probably about 100. Appeared to be mostly males. Green-winged Teal - At least 1,000, maybe more. One of largest flocks was at the south part of the south swamp. Shoveller - Only about 25, mostly males. At the south swamp. Ruddy Duck - Counted 8 in the big pond south of the road there. Western Red-tail - Heard one. Sparrow Hawk - two on the poles next to the railroad tracks. Ring-necked Pheasant - Several cocks in the field///// east of the house. Coot - about 75 Wilson's Snipe - several scattered individuals. Flicker Tule Wren - twittering here and there. Western Bluebirds - In the ash on the east side of the main pond. Pipit - A few around the northeast corner of the main pond. Several individuals perched about 20 feet up in an ash. Audubon Warbler - A flock in the ash on the northeast side of the main pond and in the ash on the east side of the south swamp. Red-wings - Appeared at 15:50 as usual. Junco, Oregon - a small flock. Song Sparrow Violet Green Swallow Five or six were flying about the main pond when we first arrived. All of swamp was roughly covered or looked over. Snipe - 2 or 300 on open water, and in some brush-water areas. Wilson Snipe - Just one flashed from nearby grass area. Western Yellow-legs - 1st of the year - 2 of them flew low over us, calling. Violet-green Swallows - the first for me, the Dave saw them Sunday. Just a couple at first, but altogether we probably saw 25 or 30 of these.
