Feb. 26, 1948 - O.S.C. Campus. Screech Owl calling every 20-40 seconds from same big tree as Tues (2-24) and in about the same place on the tree (NW side) at 20-25' W. Evening Grosbeaks, scattered small flocks, + one of up to 150-175 birds. Feb. 28, 1948, Stewart Lake, 1 1/2 mile N of Corvallis, 1410-1425 , 30 Sctd. Mallards - 6 of them flushed first as we approached, causing Clemmys to drop into HOH. Lesser Scaups - males and females present, somewhat paired - about 15-20 total. Buffleheads - 3 males and 3 females present (one of which was young mentioned before). the 3 males were really beauties, and flushed back and forth on the lake several times. Take-off runs averaged about 15 feet. Redtail Hawk immature flushed from top of ash, and flew several 100 yards to cottonwood. Coot - one or two along the east edge of the lake. Killdeer - a few Wilson Snipe - one flushed in soggy field. Flicker - calling from oak tree W. Crow - several calling from ash trees at south end, and in adjacent fields. Oregon Chickadees - in large winter flock in brush and oaks. Slender-billed Nuthatch - 2 pairs in this winter flock - one bird giving spring song. Seattle Wren - in brush with juncos. Robins - must have been 200 in oaks, and in grain field to the west of woods. Ruby-crowned Kinglets - in the winter flock Audubon Warblers - a few in the winter flock Meadowlarks - singing Brewer Blackbirds - flock of 15 or 20 feeding on the ground in the grain field. Oregon Juncos - 100-150 in the winter flock. Golden-crowned Sparrows - in poison oak thicket at the road. Song Sparrows Oregon Towhees. Feb. 28, 1948 - Peavy Cabin, MacDonald Forest, 1500', 2 Brkn, RW- - cool. Chestnut-backed Chickadees in flock with 1435-1450 Calif. Creepers and Golden-crowned Kinglets and Audubon Warblers in fir woods. Feb. 28k 1948 - Oak Creek, west of Corvallis - RW- 1600-1650 Redtail Hawk - circling over Woodducks - 2 males and 1 female lit on our "frog pond". Sparrow Hawk - one on wire line. Pheasants in field areas. - M & F Killdeer in field, and flying over, alling Flickers in nearby oaks. W. Crows - a few flying high in a NW direction, same as the big flight did some time ago. Oregon Chickadees - in oaks along creek Robins - in field, and about 1645 we watched 50 or more flying straight for cemetery hill north of Corvallis, a couple of miles away, as we have seen robins do before in heading for the winter roost there. W. Bluebirds - in fence rows. Pipits - 15-20 in fields, and others flying over, calling. Audubon Warblers - scattered individuals here and there. Meadowlarks singing as soon as the rain passed. Brewer Blackbirds - small flocks seen.
