Meadowlark - 2 Brewer Blackbirds - 2 White-crowned Sparrows - 3 AND RETURN 1615-1635 weather same. Sparrow Hawk - 2 Pheasants - 8 Killdeer - 9 Flicker - 2 Robins - 23 Bluebirds - 12 Audubon Warbler - 3 English Sparrows - 8 Willow Goldfinches - 7 January 20, 1948 12-mile Swamp, Bruce Station, 1325-1615, -Ovc/ calm, 38-40°F. Blue Heron - just 1 Common Canada Geese - about 200-250 with others at S end, flushed to N end. Lesser Canada Geese - about 3000-3500 flushed from S end. Cackling Geese - about 400-500 with the other geese. (Dave and Tom say 1500). Mallards - around 1500 in the area, 3/4 were males Baldpates - 1 Pintails - 6-700 in the area, ratio - 3:1 Green-winged Teal - at least 2500' in the north end area, in two more or less distinct flocks. They weren't on the open water, but in vegetated areas. Shovellers - 2 M and 2F /watched "leap & dive" action of 1 of 3 birds/ Wood Ducks - 7 flushed from scrub ash area, flooded Ruddy Ducks - 16 seen in one group swimming idly, 2 others at S end. Hooded Merganser - a pair on open water near center bridges. the male was a beaut. Sharp-shinned Hawk - 1 Redtail Hawk - 1 flew over low, and teal and mallards and coots flushed under it. Marsh Hawk - 1 female, for which no ducks flushed, except the coots. Pheasants in field adjacent to swamp Coots - 200-250 around. Watched 2 different ones run off, one in 45', andther in 50' Killdeer - several calling and flying around, and in nearby fields Wilson Snipe - flushed 5 separate ones over the entire east side area. Kingfisher - 1 Flickers - a few W. Crows calling from west side, in congregation tree observed before. Oregon Chickadees - a pair in brush around cabin Seattle Wren - scolding and 2 seen, one within arms reach with Tule Wren, and Song Sp. Tule Wren - scolding, and at least 6 were seen around the swamp, one within arms reach. Robins - on the ground, feeding, and a few flying over. Varied Thrush - in ash area. W. Bluebirds - quite a few, (20-25), adults and immatures, M & F in area, calling, feeding on the wing, and on the ground, and hovering a few feet above the ground. Pipits - 15-20 in fields at edge of swamp, others flying over, and calling Shrike - in full plumage - chased once by a Redwing, and otherwise observed feeding at various points around the cabin area, flying to the ground, and back to perch. Audubon Warblers - small flock in fence row brush, and a few in ash at swamp edge. Meadowlarks - a couple heard singing. Redwings - none seen early, but after 1530 a few began to drift in to the swamp, and by 1615 there were quite a few, mostly males seen. Brewer Blackbirds - a couple flew over Purple Finches - 2 in ash clump, both immatures Willow Goldfinches in brush, and fields near babin area. Oregon Towhees - M & F in the fence rows here and there. Silent most of the time. Savannah Sparrows - a couple in field along E side of swamp, silent. Golden-crowned Sparrows - 7 in one clump of fence row brush, and feeding on the ground. Song Sparrows here and there. Jan 23, 1948 - Evening grosbeaks - individuals seen every day, or calling as they fly over. Last Dec., too. Drew Hensal thruh his territory in 2 foot Oxford cedar on campus. 9:20 p.m. - Killdeer calling.
