McFadden's Swamp Jan. 18, 1948 Weather: clear and cold. Ponds covered with ice, but swamp open except at edges due to the flow of Middy Cr. Pied-billed Grebe - 2 California Heron - 1 Common Canada Goose - 5,000 in fields on the north, west, and south end of the swamp. Common Mallard - more ducks than we have ever before seen on the swamp, mallards second in abundance to Green-winged Teal. 1,500 a conservative count. Baldpate - heard a few calling. American Pintail - 550 Green-winged Teal - 2,000. Seem to congregate in the meadow at the south end, which has only a few inches of water on it. Shoveller - 2 Ruddy Duck - 10. One male showing some reddish breeding plumage. Cooper's Hawk - flushed one bird from the ground in the midst of a Wild Rose (Rosa nutkana) thicket. Its prey was a hen pheasant with the head and entrails gone. (Picture) Western Red-tailed Hawk - 1 Marsh Hawk - 1 fem. Ring-necked Pheasant - 2. One taken by the Cooper's Hawk. Killdeer - several small flocks. Wilson's Snipe - 6 Flicker Horned Lark - singing in fields on east side. American Raven - 1 Ore. Chickadee Tule Wren Robin - 3 Varied Thrush - 5 in ash trees along Middy Cr. Western Bluebird - flock of eight in field on east side. American Pipit - several large flocks. Northwestern Shrike - 1 by the cabin. Audubon's Warbler Western Meadowlark - in large flocks. Red-wing - a few singing around the bridge.
