December 7, 1947, Fern Ridge Reservoir, Lane Co. 1030-1430, Cold, with SW wind. Sky varied from hi ovc to 300 feet overcast, with lots of rain, and wind. Winter! Western Grebe - at least 2 were seen together, Blue Herons - individuals everywhere Lesser Canada Geese - a flock of 150 came over us from the south end. Cackling Geese - about 40 were in with the Lessers Mallards - a few were seen. Baldpates - 3 or 4 were seen Pintails - about 15 seen altogether Green-winged Teal - Dave and I walked up on a flock of at least 2500 of them, way out on the mud flats, but they flushed well ahead of us ! Most I've ever seen. Wood Ducks - on a mud bar near the NE dike we found at least 90 sitting there. As far as we could tell, most of them (75% at least) were beautiful males. Ruddy Duck - one on the bay below the dam Hooded Merganser - we spotted 6 of them on a pond along the south shore hiway. ? American Mergansers?? - a flock of 11 birds alit on the water just above the dam, but most were in "redhead" stage, and we aren't sure of sp.? Red-breasted Merganser - one male flew right over us after taking off from a pond below the dam. Crest, and dark head, and dark breast were evident. Sharp-shinned Hawk - one chased by Pipits and perched in ash tree top. Red-tail Hawk - a couple of immatures were seen. One full adult. Marsh Hawk made seen along dead-end road, as it flew low to the south. Sparrow Hawk - a couple were seen. Pheasants flushed from damp meadow-pasture area. Coots - common everywhere, but not too abundant, as they were in small groups. Killdeer - flying rapidly around in small flocks, and calling Wilson Snipe- a few flushed in marshy area at south end. ? Red-backed ? Sandpipers - a flock of 40-50 flew over us while we were eating lunch. We picked them by their size (compared to the Westerns we had just seen), along with their peculiar call notes. Peterson's description fitted them well. Western Sandpipers - a flock of at least 125 birds, and other smaller flocks flying round. Belted Kingfisher at south end. Flickers calling here and there ? ?? Gulls - a few adults were seen at a distance, and many immatures close up. Stellar Jay calling from ash-oak grove Ravens - a pair were seen W. Crows - a bunch of at least 30 seen on the mud flats near the Green-wing Teal Oregon Chickadees - a few Winter Wren in brush area Seattle Wren - afew Tule Wren - in cattails around the swamp. Robins - a few Golden-crowned Kinglets - a few in ash woods Ruby-crowned Kinglets in brush areas here and there Pipits - a flock of at least 60 birds along the Long Tom river, and individuals here and there, too. Western Meadowlarks - a few House Finches - in orchard trees and blackberry vines at N end. Oregon Towhees Oregon Juncos Golden-crowned S arrows in brush at north end Song Sparrows Dec. 14, 1947- 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Mary's Peak Summit. 28°-32° - SW .4-10, clouds at ground. 2 favors calling + 1 seen 1 imm.
