December 6, 1947, Yaquina Bay, from Newport to Yaquina (OSC Fish Lab), 125501600,
15 Ovc, calm, cool, occnl drizzle.
Pacific or Red-throated Loons - 3 swimming just off the fish docks at Newport
Horned Grebes - several seen here and there around the bay
Western Grebes - seen around Yaquina
Farallon Cormorants on the pilings around the docks
Brandt's Cormorant - a single diving in the channel opposite the fish lab at Yaquina.
Blue Herons here and there. One taking off, and being chased by a W. Gull.
Pacific Brant - a flock of 11 birds on a sand bar in mid-bay. Another small flock flying,
Mallards - a few seen
Baldpates - quite a few in with Pintails on SW side.
Pintails - M & F seen - quite a few
Green-wing Teal - a few in with Pintails and Balcpates.
Canvasbacks - about 10 seen - no full bright males could be seen.
Lesser Scaups - here and there - could be Greater????
Buffleheads - immatures and females on SW side. 2 full males diving on N side.
American Golden-eyes - a few seen diving, among coots, and taking off/ on long runs.
Surf Scoters - quite a few seen.
White-winged Scoters - not very many seen. One found dead.
Red-breasted Merganser - male seen
Redtail Hawk - very immature one seen along N side of bay, in air area.
Coots - common here and there in small and large groups
Killdeers - heard them
Glaucous-winged Gulls - quite a few in with hundreds of
Western Gulls and
Herring Gulls around the fish cannery docks
Flicker Chestn/ - heard and seen
Chestnut-backed Chickadees - quite common in small flocks
Seattle Wren scolding here and there
Tule Wrens in small swamps among the sand dunes on SW side of bay
Robins - one flock of 11 flew over
Hermit Thrush - in clump of brush under isolated spruce trees in sand dune area.
Ruby-crowned Kinglets in brush and spruce tree
Golden-crowned Kinglets in spruce areas
Audubon Warblers - small flock in brush, some flycatching
Red Crossbills - several flocks flying over and calling. One flock feeding in top of sp
Oregon Towhees in brush
Oregon Juncos - in spruce, and on sand dunes, among vegetation.
Song Sparrows
Kingfishers - several seen.
Dec. 6, 1947 - Yaquina Head 1500-1530, light grizzle.
