December 6, 1947, Philomath to Tidewater on Alsea R., Lincoln Co. 0800-0915 Clouds and fog down over the mtns, and in valleys, occsnl mist, cool. Duck ? a single flew up from the upper Alsea R., and its flight paralleled the car for some distance, as it pasted us. We were traveling approx. 50 m.p.m. American Mergansers - 4 were seen together in the river. Gull ? - Western or Herring - way up the river, on the bank Pigmy Owl - Dave Marshall spotted one perched at 12' in a tree in an old orchard. The bird wasn't over 30' to 40' from the highway. It was rainingg while we watched it. When we squeeked, it would turn its head from side to side, and the pattern on the back of the head, hooked somewhat like its face. Kingfishers - several were seen. Stellar Jay - one seen and heard W. Crows common in fields and pastures, in small flocks Brewer Blackbirds - here and there, particularly with cows, andcrows. Juncos seen Song Sparrow December, 6, 1947, Alsea River from Tidewater to Waldport (Eckman Slough) 0915-0945. 5 Ovc Occll drizzle, cold, and calm. Holboell's Grebe - one in Eckman slough near the highway. Size much greater than horned. Horned Grebes - several seen, black and white demarkation on head quite distinct. Western Grebes in winter plumage Parallon Cormorant - a few seen on piling, and flying blue Herons - 2 in creek Baldpates - several in with Canvasbacks and Scaups Canvasbacks - males and immatures and females (?) seen in sloughs off the river. Green-winged Teal - a few with the Cans and Scaups in slough off the river Lesser Scaups - small groups and pairs here and there along the river Ruffleheads - immatures, females and full males seen. white-winged Scoter - 1 male, and also a female on Eckman slough Surf Scoter - the more common of the two species seen. Red-breasted Merganser - just one, quite far out. Sparrow Hawk - calling sharply as it flew from a tall, isolated spruce Ruffed Grouse - 3/4 grown young at very edge of highway - it just sat there ! Coots - rafts of them, and also small groups Glaucous-winged Gull - full adult flew in low and close to us Western Gull - several seen Herring Gull - a few of what we take to be this species. Horned Owl - flushed from tall, old spruce at edge of highway, and large slough. KINGFISHER - WATCHED ONE DIVE IN ECKMAN SLOUGH FROM 15' AT 45° ANGLE- GOT 3" FISH. COMPLETELY SUBMERGED. CLICKER - called stellar Jay calling Golden-crowned Kinglets calling from spruce Ruby-crowned Kinglets in bursh, and scolding. Sitka Crossbills - flock of 15 flew over, calling. Lesser Loon Blue Heron Barrow Golden-eye (Bob Storm) Western Gulls chestnut-backed Chickadees in woods on north side Golden-crowned Kinglets calling and working in spruce Ruby-crowned Kinglets scolding in the brush Brewer Blackbirds on wire lines at edge of town Sitka Crossbills - singing from tree tops.
