Redtail Hawk - 1 perched on fence Killdeer - 2 Brewer Blackbirds - 1 Nov. 25, 1947, Oak-fir hills 3 miles W of 12-mile Swamp: 1340-1510. Sharp-shinned Hawk - 1 flew into the firs atop a ridge near us, and perch in oak. Ruffed Grouse - flushed a couple of them. Mtn. Quail - no coveys seen, but found the remains of 1 apparently hawk-killed. Mourning Doves - 20 in the fence rows, and in oaks below the hill. Flicker - a few Stellar Jays - several along the lane uphill, and others in the oak woods. Raven - 1 flew over the ridge top. Western Crow - heard them Oregon Chickadee - a few at foot of hill in brush Chestnut-backed Chickadee - many working the oak and fir in the ridge area. Red-breasted Nuthatch - heard them. Winter Wren - scolding Seattle Wren - scolding Varied Thrush - several in the mixed, or oak areas. Western Bluebirds - flying over, or perched near clearings to catch insects. Golden-crowned Kinglets - flocks working thru the fir groves. Ruby-crowned Kinglets - scattered individuals quite common in fir and oak. Pipits flew over NW Shrike - one flew from fence row perch along the road up, in flat pasture area. Purple Finch - calling from the firs and oaks Oregon Juncos common White-crowned Sparrows in fence rows Song Sparrows Nov. 25, 1947, 12-mile Swamp, Bruce Station, 1515-1615, 100% / 65°F Pied-billed Grebe - just one immature seen Blue Heron - 1 Lesser Canada Geese - swimming in "lake" at south end of swamp - 45-50 of them. Mallards - 400-450 in the area. Pintails - at least 75 were present - most being males Green-winged Teal - 75-100 in one flock as all that were seen. Shovellers - 250-275 males and females or immatures. Ruddy Ducks - 2 immatures or females seen (winter plumage??) Marsh Hawks - 2 females or immatures seen Pheasants - calling from adjacent fields. Coots - 500-600 in the area - all splashing as they dive for plants, and after they come up to shake the plants about. Wilson Snipe - just one flushed near shack Flicker Raven - calling Crows flew over Tule Wren - scolding from brush in and around the marsh. Robin - just one in ash grove Pipits flying over NW Shrike - one perched atop its "pet" tree in same place as before. 3 seen today. W. Meadowlarks - singing. Redwings - came in to the swamp in small flocks about 530 p.m. and perched in spirea. Brewer Blackbirds - 2 or 3 flocks of 150-200 birds flying around, as if going to roo Oregon Juncos here and there Golden-crowned Sparrows in fence rows. st. Song Sparrows common.
