Nov. 18, 1947, Oak-hill S of Philomath - 1330-1420 15 Brkn, RW- 55-60° Valley Quail in rose-pasture area. Flickers common on the ground in the pasture, and in the oak areas. Stellar Jay - one in brushy area. Oregon Chickadees common Slender-billed Nuthatches calling - Winter Wren - in brush pile in fir forest area - quite dense Seattle Wren - in fence row at edge of oak hillside. Varied Thrush - a great many in brush piles, on the ground andin the oak trees. Western Bluebirds - small flock in oaks, and flying over,calling. Ruby-crowned Kinglets - a few scolding Golden-crowned Kinglets working oak, and young fir mixture. Hutton Vireo - heard one giving its "buzzing" notes several times in the rain Audubon Warbler - a few in the area. Oregon Towhees in brush and fence rows Song Sparrows here and there. Nov. 18, 1947, Philomath to hills south, and then east to 99-W south of Airport and onto Kiger Island - 1420-1520. Mostly farmlands. Ballards - on ponds and along ditches in flooded flat areas W of airport. Redtail Hawks - quite a few seen circling over the countryside. One being chased by a flock of Brewer Blackbirds Marsh Hawk - saw one full male flying up a swale in the foothill area, and later saw a female over a field near the Pac. hiway. Sparrow Hawks - very common, perched on wire lines along the way in singles, or pairs, or hovering over nearby fields. Valley Quail - in small coveys near fence rows. Pheasants - here and there. Killdeer - none seen except in one green flooded field S of the airport - about 150 here. Flickers - common on the ground in pastures and in oak areas. Lewis-Woodpecker - one flew from one oak grove into another one. Long-tailed Jays - in the brushy areas along the road, and in oak groves, too. Crows - several flocks of 8-25 birds scattered over the area, feeding on the ground, or flying. Oregon Chickadees in the fence rows. Slender-billed Nuthatches calling from the oak groves. Seattle Wrens in the fence rows along the road Western Bluebird -small flock flying over oak area. Ruby-crowned Kinglet - a few scolding from the fen e rows. Audubon Warblers - flocks here and there in fence rows and groves. W. Meadowlark - one perched on a wire line. None singing. Brewer Blackbirds flocking in various trees, and others chasing a Redtail Hawk Pine Siskin - flock in willow and alder trees beside the Willamette R, at gravel pits. Willow Goldfinch - small flock in open field area,near fence row Oregon Towhee - in fence rows Oregon Juncos very common along fence rows and in brush areas. Song Sparrows in fence rows. Kingfisher - one at the Willamette R. Gravel Pits - Kiger Island Pipit - one flying over open field area.
