October 16, 1947, Dixon Creek Ridge 1245-1415, 10 Ovc, RW- 62°F Marsh Hawk perched in top of willow snag along the creek - female Band-tailed Pigeons - 4 flew from tops of D. Fir as I approached. Flicker - a good many along the river course, and on ground in pasture areas. Stellar Jay - several at edge of D.Fir-Oak and creek bottom woods., scolding and getting acorns from oaks. Oregon Chickadees - a few along the creek. W. Crow - a flock of 25-30 on the ground in a nearby field. Chestnut-backed Chickadees - quite a few in with a large flock of Ruby-crowns and Bush-tits. Winter Wrens - 2 seen together Seattle Wren - just one seen in midst of the chickadee-kinglet-bush-tit flock. Red-breasted Nuthatch - several in with chickadees, kinglets, and bush-tits. Bush Tits - about 40 in one flock, and also 15-20 in a flock ¼-mile away. Robins - a few heard calling Golden-crowned Kinglets - several with ruby crowns, and with beautiful crests. Ruby-crowned Kinglets - a flock of 15-20 in with bushtits and chickadees, etc. Oregon Towhee - several seen. Oregon Juncos - a small flock along the creek. Fox Sparrow in cleared forest brush, scolding me. Song Sparrow - just one heard and seen. Oct. 16th, 1947, N. Cemetery Hill, 1415-1445, 10 Ovc, RW- Scotchbroom-oak Sharp-shinned Hawk perched on light pole Flickers - dozens feeding on the ground, and flew into oaks as I flushed them. Long-tailed Jay - several scolding, and others observed securing acorns, and flying to their special tree with them. Varied Thrush - heard and saw one pair in a scrub oak area. W. Bluebirds flying over, and perched here and there, calling. Pipits - a flock of 14 flew over. Willow Goldfinches - 6 or 7 seen along the road. Oregon Towhhe - a few "mewing" from the scotch broom. Golden-crown Sparrows - at least 6 diff. birds giving their plaintive notes, and observed several perched atop small bushes. Fox Sparrows in the thickets, one scolded me boldly. Song Sparrow - a few heard, and one seen. Oct 20, 1947- Willamette R. gravel Pt's - 2 p.m. - RW- 80° Spotted Sandpiper - pair flying back & forth upstream & down, calling, & flying as if courting.
