June 1, 1947, Silverton to Stayton - 10-11 a.m. Very intense thunderstorm, with clouds at 200 feet, very dark, and 25& SW to W wind, with heavy rain ! Vulture - one flying into a fir grove. Violet-Green Swallows, Barn Swallows, and Cliff Swallows were flying and feeding in all this storm, dark as it was. Robins - out along fence rows in the storm. Russet-backed Thrush - at edge of road in the rain and wind. Pacific Yellowthroats - flew across the road during the heaviest part of the storm. Meadowlarks, Redwing Blackbirds, and Brewer Blackbirds out in the storm, along the fence rows, too. June 5, 1947 - Stewart Lake, 5 p.m. Watched Brewer Blackbird + Sharp-shinned Hawk both chase a circling Red-tail Hawk high. Cedar Waxwings feeding on ripening Serviceberries 2 per. Wood Ducks on the lakes 1 per. Mallards - 1 hen "flopped" water, but I couldn't locate nest, or young. Many Tree + Violet-green Swallows over the lake. June 7, 1947, 12-mile Swamp, Bruce Station 130 to 3 p.m. Blue Heron - flushed one from the west side of the swamp. Mallard - a couple of pair seen, and one F acted as if a nest were close by Wood Ducks - flushed 2F and 1 M from the N end. Vulture - 6 circling over the swamp area. Marsh Hawk - female crossed the hiway on the way back, chased by a Brewer Blackbird. Sparrow Hawk - one male perched on a fence post by the road, and stayed close. Bobwhite - one crossed the road ahead of the car, and flushed and coasted ahead of us at 23 mph for 25 feet or so before turning off. Wilson Snipe - heard one or two, supposedly winnowing along the east side center. Mourning Dove - several pair were seen. Pacific Nighthawk - Tom McCallister reports hearing one today. Barn Swallow - several over the swamp. Nest had 3 young, and no sign of two eggs extra we found last week. Pin feathers coming out on wings, up to 3/8" long. Banded the 3 young. Parents uttered singular notes as they swooped up to the nest. Cliff Swallows - many of them over the swamp. We must have seen 40 or so. Purple Martin - Tom and I spotted 3 or 4 circling fairly high with Cliff Swallows over the field, just east of the swamp. Pacific Yellowthroats - common along the fence rows. Redwing Blackbirds - banded two nests of 4 young each, and found 3 very dirty and sick-looking eggs in another, and a set of 5 clean ones in another nest. All later nests seem to be in the Ash and Spirea, rather than the Carex, etc. Brewer Blackbirds Oregon Towhees - along one of the fence rows. Song Sparrows - in the open/ fence rows.
