Blue Grouse - hooting now and then Mountain Quail - one was heard more or less continuously for the most of the p.m. Flicker - heard one Pileated Woodpecker - heard one Olive-sided Flycatcher - heard a couple. Stellar Jay - quite a few seen and heard, giving many different calls. One pair courting. One flew over, high, giving a sort of "croak". Another did an outside loop. Raven - two diff. heard. One flew over, and circled high on set wings before gliding off. Brown Creeper - saw one pair working a D. Fir and oak Robin - saw a few Golden-crowned Kinglets - a small flock of 7 seen in fir area. Meadowlark - singing Western Tanager - heard the "pittock" call all day. Evening Grosbeaks - a few flying here and there and calling. Pine Siskin - flock of 15 or 20 working the fir tree tops. Towhee Junco Song Sparrow May 31, 1947, Milk Ranch, Abiqua Creek, 430 to 530 p.m. Clouds and FW - Blue Grouse hooting Mountain Quail - flushed one pair from the edge of the road', and they flew 10 feet. Band-tailed Pigeons - flushed 4 or 5 from a fir clump on open south slope. Mourning Dove - heard some in the snag-burn area. Vaux Swift - saw 7 of them on the wing Rufous Hummingbird - one female seen. Flicker - heard and saw several. Pileated Woodpecker - as I came to the nesting snag, the female entered the nest, and stayed in when she saw I was parked nearby. She remained in for over 15 minutes, at which time I became tired of waiting, and moved on. Red-breasted Sapsucker - has nest at 18 feet on SE side of 6" D. Fir snag #4 on the exposed South slope about 120 feet from the Pileated Woodpecker nest. Little Flycatcher - saw a couple of them. Olive-backed Flycatcher - one perched atop a tall live D. Fir. Violet-green Swallows flying low over pasture. Young bird perched on snag at edge of the pasture, preening its feathers. It didn't fly while I was there. Slender-billed Nuthatch - heard a couple. Robin - a few seen. Russet-backed Thrush - heard a few, and saw one at edge of road. Western Bluebirds - still going to and from nest hole described previously. No young seen in the area yet - still in the nest, I guess. Cassin Vireos - a few heard. Townsend Warbler - saw one working thru a clump of small fir and alders by the edge of the creek that drains the pond. Had a swell view of it. Sang while I watched. Pacific Yellowthroat - only a couple were heard. Western Tanager - heard one. Towhee - a few seen and heard Junco - a few heard and seen. White-crowned Sparrows - two perched on snag over a briar patch. Song Sparrow - a few singing, and others seen. May 31, 1947, Abiqua Creek, 2 miles below Abiqua Camp, near Hande's cabin. Rufous Hummingbird Kingfisher - just one Chestnut-backed Chickadees. Mountain Chickadees - just two seen working alder along the edge of the creek. Winter Wrens singing here and there. Russet-backed Thrush - called with me for several minutes - very shy today. Song Sparrows heard and seen.
