May 10, 1947, 2 miles north of Corvallis - clear and windy from north 330-545 p.m. W. Redtail Hawk - a pair were located circling over the hill area, and their nest was found at 75 feet in a more or less isolated cottonwood, on an open south- east-sloping hillside. One young was reported in the nest last week, with a garter snake and 2 moles were in the nest, too. One dead egg, partly along. Band-tailed Pigeons - 6 of them came down a valley and lit in the top of a clump of oak beside the creek. Mourning Doves - several pair were seen, and others heard in the area. Violet-green Swallows common, as were Barn Swallows near the ranch house. Robins paired and feeding on the flat valley pastures. Yellow Warbler - heard Black-throated Gray Warbler - one male seen in the oak and cottonwood on the near open hIl Meadowlarks singing and giving single notes everywhere. House Finch seen Purple Finches singing on wire lines going into town Lazuli Buntings - saw 5 in one bunch and 3 in another in the valleys here. Vesper Sparrows everywhere, and singing now and then. Chipping Sparrows - one pair seen. May 12, 1947, Poultry Bldg, OSC, 3 p.m. Warbling Vireo seen and heard in elm trees in front of the building. May 13, 1947, Stewart Lake, 8 to 10 a.m. scattered clouds, cool, breezy. Pied-billed Grebe - swimming among emergent pond lily leaves. Anthony Green Heron - perched on fallen oak tree with 4 Woodies and 15-20 Mud Turtles. American Bittern - heard one at the north end, and later saw it before it flew to the south end. Mallard - one pair present Wood Ducks - 2 pair were perched on the fallen oak tree with the Green Heron and the 15-20 Mud Turtles. Vulture - a pair sailed over high, heading west, in a straight line. W. Redtail Hawk - just one seen. Sparrow Hawk - on wire line Bobwhites - calling everywhere Valley Quail - se veral heard Pheasants - crowing here and there Killdeer - a few were seen Coots - just 3 were seen. Spotted Sandpiper - one perched on the pond lily leaves near the pond center. It flew giving its call notes. Mourning Doves - cooing here and there. Rufous Hummingbird - just one Flicker - a few Caircner Woodpecker - one in ash and willow thicket Little Flycatcher - just one perched on wireline Horned Larks - a few in the adjoining fields. Violet-green Swallow Tree Swallows Barn Swallows Cliff Swallows Crow - heard one Long-tailed Jay - in oak-ash thicket Oregon Chickadee - a few in the oak area. Bush Tits - in the oak woods. Slender-billed Nuthatch - mostly in the oak, but one heard in the cottonwood-willow. Seattle Wren - in spirea-rose brush at edge of lake. Robins - feeding young in nest I could not locate. Russet-backed Thrush - just one heard and seen. Western Bluebirds - 3 flew over. Ruby-crowned Kinglets - in the ash-oak brush. Cassin Vireo - OVER -
