April 27, 1947, Rogue River - Agness-Illahe 8 a.m. Wilson Snipe flushed from sand bar at edge of river eddy. Western Gulls common Cassin Vireos - in the trees around the cabin. April 27, 1947, N Side of Rogue R., Illahe-Clay Hills (7 miles) 0900-1830 pst. American Mergansers - 3 not quite in full plumage were on a sand bar by the river at 2 p.m. and had to enter the water to take off when we flushed them. Vultures - many everywhere along the river. Red-tail Hawk and nest on east side of D. Fir, against the trunk, at 60' in the tree which was on top of a hill. Golden-Eagle perched over edge of river in Quercus chrysolepus Osprey circling over river eddy. Ruffed Grouse - 1 pair which didn't want to fly, but we couldn't locate any nest. Hungarian Partridge - 1 pair in arid oak-madrone hill area. Mtn. Quail - 1 pair were put to flight along the trail. Western Gulls the entire distance we hiked along the river. Had good views of them perched on the rocks. Watched some circling with Vulture and Swallows. White-throated Swifts - 7 seen over high, slope and bluff at 1030. Rufous Hummingbirds - common, with a pair almost every 1/4 mile or so. Flickers - I saw 2, and one of these flew across the river. Violet-green Swallows Stellars Jays in the timber. California Creeper - heard and saw just one in oak forest. Dipper - at Flora Dell Falls - 2 adults and 3 nearly grown young with light gray plumage and pinkish legs. One young flew off the head of the falls and lit in an alder tree 40 feet off the ground below. Adults were busy carrying food and still feeding them. Robin - just one Ruby-crowned Kinglets - 2 seen in oak fir woods Hutton Vireos - in Fir-oak woods Audubon Warblers - quite com on - notes and singing. Towhees - Chipping Sparrows - 2 at base of bluff at Schneider's Ranch May 1, 1947, Stewart Lake, N. of Corvallis - 7 to 9 a.m. High fog, cool Bob Whites calling from several fields. One seen in an isolated Oak tree which I approached within 8 feet. Pheasants crowing everywhere. Killdeer - seemed to be paired up, and would run, rather than fly from their area. Band-tail Pigeons - a pair were observed perched quietly in the top of an Oak. Horned Larks in most of the fields, and flying over singing and calling. Violet-green Swallow - a few flying, and most perched on wire lines. Lutescent - Warblers - singing. Audubon Warblers - in the tops of the oaks Meadowlarks - singing everywhere Willow Goldfinches - a few full males were seen Towhees Chipping Sparrows - trilling from wire line by the road. Song Sparrows May 1, 1947, S Spur, Mac Donald Forest, N of Corvallis, 115-5 p.m., Warm and breezy. Vulture circling over. Coast Jay - one seen, and several heard. Calif. Creeper - 2 seen in the oak area. Golden-crowned Kinglets - a small flock working a clump of fir. Cassin Vireo - one calling persistently from the top of some firs. Lutescent Warbler - a few singing Audubon Warbler - a couple heard. Black-throated Gray Warbler - seen and heard. MacGillivray Warbler seen in fir area. Towhee
