April 15, 1947, 12-mile Swamp, Bruce Station, Clear and very warm, N 7. 1330-1515 Blue Heron - just one flew over. Lesser Canada Goose - we thought they had all gone, but we found one trying to sneak away thru the marsh vegetation at the N end of the swamp. Finally it flew. Whether or not it was sick, I don't know. White-fronted Goose - we were surprised to see 15 of them, not at all shy, waddling and swimming around in the north half of the swamp. We later flushed them, and they flew to the south end. Mallards - not too many pairs, those remaining possibly planning to or are nesting?? Gadwall - a fine male, and possibly a few others were in the area. Baldpate - a half dozen or so. Pintails - perhaps 100-150 birds, pretty well divided as to sex. Green-winged Teal - 50-75 Shovellers - almost 100 may have been seen. About 2/3 were males, it seemed. Vulture - one circled nearby. Marsh Hawk, just as we were leaving we saw a rather small female working over the same field that we have seen the M & F in previously. Pheasants - crowing from the surrounding farm lands. Virginia Rail - T. McCallister flushed one this week, not many yards from where we flushed the one last week. Sora Rail [illegible] - we heard a strange series of 3 notes, that may have been this species but of course none of us are banking on it. Checked out correctly. Wilson Snipe - perhaps 25 or 30 were flushed from flooded pasture at the north end of the swamp. In beautiful plumage now. Yellowlegs - perhaps 15-20 in the area Rufous Hummingbird - flew by an ash thicket Violet-green Swallow - a few showed up late in the afternoon. Raven - a couple flew by the north end, calling. Audubon Warblers - M & F working the ash groves by the swamp. Pacific Yellowthroat - 2 were heard in the ash groves. Redwings - well-paired up now, but we found only one newly constructed nest, and the one that was wet and new last week, now is dry, and contained one egg. It is about 10" above the water. Savannah Sparrows - in the fields and fence rows. Song Sparrows - a few seen and heard. Oak-Fir Belt, 3 miles west of 12-mile Swamp, 1515-1630. Vulture Ruffed Grouse - flushed one from a young D. Fir thicket. Pheasants crowing from the farm land below. Mourning Doves, in the road on the way up. Rufous Hummingbird - 1 Pileated Woodpecker - heard one calling twice. Violet-green Swallow - a half-dozen or so near a ranch house. Hutton Vireo - one or two were heard - 2 calls were given. Lutescent Warbler - 3 or 4 were heard in the area, calling plainly. Meadowlarks - flushed along the road up. Brewer Blackbirds Purple Finch heard one singing. Junco April 16, 1947 - O.S.C. Canyon - Willow Goldfinches, Pine Siskins [illegible] + Evening in great number in the Canyonal slimes, etc. The air was filled with a blur of bird notes! Apr. 17th Vulture S. MacDonald Forest Ridge: - Stormy - rain + wind. Coast Jay Blue House Roosting andrews Warblers junco not there 34 Evening Grosbeaks flew over Apr. 18th - O.S.C. Canyon. 9 a.m. Savannah Sparrows Mallards Myrtle Warblers at Stuart L. White-fronted + Gadwall geese & Robin on nest that had 4 eggs on Apr. 17th. Nest at 23' in Conifer trees or east side of Agric.
