April 11, 1947, 1530, Lewisburg, Benton Co. Vultures had to flap wings continuously because of the calm air this p.m. Cliff Swallows building nests under the eaves of a barn not far from the hiway. April 8 12, 1947, Woodburn, Pudding River, Oregon 0900-1145 Wood Ducks - apir on pond. Vultures circling over now and then. Red-tail Hawks - 2 & 2 Sparrow Hawk on a wire line Pheasant Great Horned Owl - perched in dense cedar clump. Mouring Doves Kingfisher Rufous Hummingbird Flicker - a few Red-breasted Sapsucker - female digging nest in live cedar on east side at 32 feet. Saw another one about 150 feet away, feedin' in Big-leaf maple Harris Woodpecker - one seen. Gairdner Woodpecker - saw a female working on a nest hole in a willow in the water on the south side at 28 feet (I heard another working noisily off to the NW of this tree). Soon she gave a call note and flew away to the NW and the male came from the NW and started working where the female left off. Very little noisy was made here, but the wood pieces flew anyway. The female then worked noisily on the tree the male had been on. The first cavity was already about 2 1/2" deep and they were starting to "turn it downward". The second tree was a willow 170 feet NW, also still in the water. The hole was at 25 feet on the N side. It was about 1" deep. This 2nd willow was dead. Violet-green Swallow Coast Jays Crows flew over. Oregon Chickadees Red-breasted Nuthatch Slender-billed Nuthatch Creeper Bush Tit Winter Wren - singin' in the woods 2 Seattle Wrens in bush, from all actions in chasing others away, they had territory Robin Bluebirds 2 Hutton Vireo's calling at the rate of about 65 notes/minute. Cassin Viroe - heard 3 of them this a.m. None to be seen. Lutescent Warbler Meadowlark 32 Evening Grosbeaks Purple Finch Willow Goldfinch feeding on willow buds Towhees abundant Vesper Sparrow Junco Chipping Sparrows Fox Sparrows Song Sparrows
