April 8, 1947, Oak-Fir Belt, 3 miles west of 12-mile Swamp, 545-450 p.m. Vulture - one on the ground, feeding on a quite old skeleton of a sheep. Sharp-shinned Hawk - 1 soared over the fir woods near the "owl". Sp. Redtail Hawk - heard one. (Stellar Jay? ) Sparrow Hawk - heard a couple of them. Pheasant - M & F in field, with F squatted on the ground. M 8 feet away. Valley Quail - in oak fence row. ??? Long-eared Owl ??? - flushed from a tall fir, within 30 or 40 feet of the snag we "picked" for the nesting site for this bird. Again we caught only a glimpse of it, but again its smaller size put it in this species. The nesting sites checked again showed no use, so perhaps the birds haven't started to nest yet., if there are two of them. Rufous Hummingbird - one along the fence row by the road. Lewis Woodpecker - 1 flying from one oak grove to a other. Stellar Jay - we flushed about 7 of them from an oak-serviceberry fence row along the road at about 445 p.m. Long-tailed Jay - heard a couple in the oak groves on the hillsides. Chestnut-backed Chickadee - working some oak Brush. Ruby-crowned Kinglets - several seen. One singing its light warbling call. Golden-crowned Kinglets - in small flocks in the brush, particularly coniferous. Audubon Warblers - saw 2 beautiful males in the oak. Juncos present. April 9, 1947, Corvallis to Poison Oak Lake, Linn Co., 830-1115 a.m. Cooper Hawk - perched in a tree in the middle of a field, near a farmhouse. Sparrow Hawk - 2 seen circling around a dead cottonwood. Male Pheasant - getting grit at the edge of the hiway. Wilson Snipe - flushed 5 from a flooded field near the hiway. Killdeer - a couple seen. Rufous Hummingbird - hovering over serviceberry flowers. Flicker - a couple feeding on the ground. Violet-greet Swallow - plentiful Tree Swallow - a few were seen. Cliff Swallow - 3 were seen in open country. Long-tailed Jay - one heard and anotherseen in ash thicket. Oregon Chickadees working an oak tree. Seattle Wren - one scolding. Robin W. Bluebirds - on fence and wire lines. Ruby-crowned Kinglets - working brush along a small creek. Lutescent Warblers - seemed to be plentiful in both fir and oak-ash along the way. Audubon Warbler - working the bunches of fir along the hiway. Yellow Warbler - singing from high in a L. fir. Meadowlarks Redwings Brewer Blackbirds - a mixed sex flock of 150-200 birds flushed from one grain field. Evening Grosbeaks - in an isolated L. Fir in front of a ranch house. Purple Finch - singing up to 930 or 10 this a.m. A few seen. Willow Goldfinches - com on. Green-backed Goldfinches - a few were seen. Towhees in most of the fence rows. Chipping Sparrow - in English Walnut near one farm house. Juncos working the brush in a small flock Song Sparrows - quite a few singing and others seen.
