April 1, 1947, Corvallis, Oregon 7 a.m. Violet-green Swallows are everywhere in the air this morning, individually or in small groups, chasing each other, etc. One group of 8 were observed circling in a tight c circle about 40 feet above 17th Street. Two of the birds were joined, one by its bill to the tail of the other, and they more or less spiraled down like a leaf, while the other swallows circled in very close. As they reached 15 feet or so, the two broke apart, and there immediately began a jockeying among the other swallows for position with the bird that had been held by the tail or rump. Could it have been an estrus female? No others succeeded in hooking on while I watched, although several came close. Also seen were Rufous Hummingbirds - 3 Also one in river bottom land at Quarry at 3:30 p.m. Robins Evenings Grosbeaks in small groups Purple Finch Green-backed Goldfinches on wire line Song Sparrow April 1, 1947 - 12-mile Swamp, Bruce Station, 10 Ovc, RW- , 1330-1500. Horned Grebe - one male (?) in full plumage Lesser Canada Geese at south end of swamp. Quite a few yet (1500???) Mallards - a few scattered pairs, and a large flock of M & F at north of swamp. Shovellers - perhaps 40 pairs in the area, mostly males (5:1). Vultures - altogether about 8 were seen circling the area and hiway area. Marsh Hawk - Female sallied over same area we have seen male before. Pheasants - 3 cocks and 2 hens flushed from field next to swamp. Wilson Snipe - 4 or 5 were flushed from flooded areas near the swamp. Flicker - 1 Tule Wren - 1 heard just before we left. Violet-green Swallows - none present when we arrived, but in an hour several dozen showed up from "out of no-where", and stayed till we left, at least. Tree Swallows - a few of them were seen with the Violet-greens. Robins - a few quite pale individuals seen. Pipits - 15-20 NEAR SWAMP Meadowlarks - 2 Reewings - a few pair scattered over the marsh. Song Sparrows here and there. April 2, 1947 - Corvallis Evening grosbeaks feeding on Big-leaf/Maple blossoms about noon Chipping Sparrows singing from top of Linden tree on the campus. April 3, 1947, Corvallis, and Stewart Lake, noon to 4 p.m. Cloudy, W15, 50°F. Cackling Goose single at the south end of the lake in company with a single White-fronted Goose. Both flew together to the north end of the lake. This peculiar association has been noted before at this lake. Vultures - a couple flying around near the lake in the very strong wind. Killdeer - a couple in the flooded field. Wilson Snipe - 3 or 4 were flushed. Spotted Sandpiper - flushed from the south shore of the lake. 1/2 Rufous Hummingbirds - male and female perched on apple twigs, amid blossoms. Flicker - a few seen. Tree Swallows over the lake. Slender-billed Nuthatch - gave two type of call notes from the oaks Pipits - 36 were flushed from the flooded grain field near the lake. Meadowlarks - perched on wire lines singing. Purple Finches - various places here in town.
