March 24, 1947, Lower Morongo Dry Canyon, 1 mi. S of Riverside-San Berdu County Line on road from Devil's Garden to 29 Palms., 1000 PST. Phoradendron californicum present on mesquite and here too was a pair of Phainopeplas. I found a nest at 4½ feet in mesquite on the NW side of the bush on a horizontal limb, with another horizontal limb over it. I flushed the female off the nest and found 2 eggs, light blue-gray and heavily spotted (lighter toward the poles) with purple-brown (almost forming a band), fine spots. Egg size about ½" x 3/4". The nest lining of fine plant fibers and cottony material. Outside of dry grassestems. Inside diameter 2¼", depth 1¼". The parent birds stayed nearby and returned to the nest within one minute after we left Also saw Spotted Towhee, San Diego, and House Finches. Flicker California Woodpeckers Coast Jays in evergreen Eucalyptus groves; several of them Long-tailed Jays in live oak area. Ruby-crowned Kinglets - pair singing in an alder. Cassin Vireo - 3 were heard. Yellow Warbler - saw 1, and heard 2 others. Willow Goldfinches inthe canyon Oregon Towhee Chipping Sparrows - 7 heard and 5 were seen.
