March 24, 1947, Lower Morongo Dry Canyon, 1 mi. S of Riverside-San Berdu
County Line on road from Devil's Garden to 29 Palms., 1000 PST.
Phoradendron californicum present on mesquite and here too was a pair of
Phainopeplas. I found a nest at 4½ feet in mesquite on the NW side of the bush
on a horizontal limb, with another horizontal limb over it.
I flushed the female off the nest and found 2 eggs, light blue-gray and heavily
spotted (lighter toward the poles) with purple-brown (almost forming a band), fine
spots. Egg size about ½" x 3/4".
The nest lining of fine plant fibers and cottony material. Outside of dry
grassestems. Inside diameter 2¼", depth 1¼". The parent birds stayed nearby and
returned to the nest within one minute after we left
Also saw Spotted Towhee, San Diego,
and House Finches.
