March 23, 1947, Joshua Tree National Monument, 5000' elev. southeast of Warrens Well, 1030-1800 PST. Turkey Vultures Red-tail Hawk - soaring over rimrock. Plumed Quail - heard and flushed several. They were all over the valley and rocky hillsides where we camped. Stellar Jays - quite common Blue-fronted ssp. Pinon Jay - a small flock was seen, in Pinon pine, naturally ! Quite noisy. California Jay - a few in the area. Cactus Wren - chortling. Rock Wren - singing. Lead-colored Bush Tits - flocks working thru the Juniper. Plain Titmouse (San Diego ssp.) - singing from low Juniper brush. Hard to see. Ruby-crowned Kinglets. California Thrasher (Toxostoma redivivum redivivum) long bill, curved, and I was first attracted to it by continuous mockingbird-like songs coming from somewhere - I finally located it partially hidden in the top of a Pinon Pine. Later one sang within 50 feet of us where we were getting breakfast ! House Finch San Diego Towhee - saw one male. Same notes as our own ssp. Desert Sparrow - 12-15 in Joshua-Yucca valley. Ladder-back Woodpecker Bewick Wren - Baird's Wren - Robin House Finch Turkey Vulture - a flock of about 45 circling over the mountains NE of camp. March 24, 1947, Joshua Tree Nat. Mon. 5000', 0530-0900 PST. Vultures circling in groups of 35-45 from 0645 to 0800, and all move off together, flapping their wings. Mtn. Quail - giving their singular notes before sun-up this a.m. I'd estimate 15 scattered around this small valley. Flicker heard. California Jay s seen and heard. Cactus Wren - chortling. Plain Titmouse (San Diegan) singing at 0615 this a.m., very near camp. California Thrasher - song similar to a mockingbird. Close to camp at breakfasttime. March 24, 1947, Joshua Tree Nat. Mon, descending northward in elevation. 0900-0930 Sparrow Hawk - 1 seen. Mtn. Quail - flushed a pair from the road. California Jays - many present, in small flocks. Sage Thrashers - 2 in a juniper. Had an excellent view of them. Shrike on a Joshua tree. Scott's Oriole - one seen atop a small Joshua within 1/4 mile of the main hiway. Had an excellent view of its yellowish and black plumage and Dr. Edmund C. Jaeger verified the identify. House Finches present Gambel Sparrows - 15-20 flushed along the road.
