Havasu Lake Refuge, Ariz.-Calif. RESUME - November, 1947 Weather Conditions. A rather normal month, somewhat colder than usual. Minor sandstorm on 10th. Whirlwinds in Chesehevis Valley on 19th. Frost at Topock on 20th. Drizzling rain on the 29th amounting to less than .05", otherwise the month was dry. Phenological Data. Havasu Lake levels varied from hh6.28 on the 30th to hh7.67 on the 16th (top level, h50.0). 2 tarantulas seen between Vidal and Needles Landing junctions on 8th. Considerable Najas marina noted in north part of Beal Lake on 9th. Willow leaves at Topock had assumed bright fall colors on 20th; upper parts cattail leaves turning brown. Cottonwoods in full yellow color in Bill Williams Delta on 24th; on same date, about 5 sec ft. of water in Bill Williams River; Tarantula Hawks and Queen butterflies seen. Highlights of Bird Records. 330 Common Egrets seen in one flock east of Yuma on 5th. Snowy Egrets apparently wintering in Topock and Bill Williams Delta areas; 6 seen above Topock on 8th, 1 in Bill Williams Delta on 24th. The dearth of Black-crowned Night Herons continues. Canada Geese had not yet reached a maximum of 100 above Topock by the 30th; Snow Geese were not seen. Ducks have not been plentiful, with Gadwalls down 65% from last year's numbers. About 200 Ring-necked and Lesser Scaups were present on lower Havasu Lake. Two Common Golden-eyes were seen on lower Havasu Lake on the 28th. 40 Buffle-heads seen in Bill Williams Arm and Delta on 24th. A Hooded Merganser seen in Bill Williams Delta on 24th. First Common Mergansers, 5 in Bill Williams Arm on 7th. 1 Zone-tailed Hawk seen on Colorado River Reservation on 11th. 1 Golden Eagle seen above Topock on 20th, another a few miles above Parker Dam on 28th. 1 Virginia Rail seen in Bill Williams Delta on 24th. Nearly 8,000 Coot wintering on Havasu Lake; still 2500 present at Beal Lake on 20th, feeding on Potamogeton beds; total Havasu Lake Refuge population is estimated at 12,000 Coots. 1 Red-backed Sandpiper collected in Bill Williams Delta on 24th; 7 Avocets present at same place on same date. 1 Western Gull seen in ParkerDam area on 12th, 24th, and 28th. 1 Bonaparte Gull seen in Bill Williams Arm on 7th, 8 on lower Havasu Lake on 18th, 1 at Parker Dam on 24th. 1 Ground Dove seen on Colorado River Reservation on 27th. 9 Inca Doves seen on Colorado River Reservation on 2nd. 1 Lewis Woodpecker seen on Colorado River Reservation on 11th. 2 Violet-green Swallows seen in Bill Williams Delta on 24th. Almost 2,000 Tree Swallows above Topock on 20th (Beal Lake). A few Robins noted, on Colorado River Reservation, at Parker Dam, and along river below the Dam. First Mexican Bluebirds, 4 in Bill Williams Delta on 24th. First Mountain Bluebirds, 3 south of Quartzsite on 5th. 20 Yellow-headed Blackbirds seen on Colorado River Reservation on 11th.
