Havasai Lake Refuge, Ariz - Calif. Resume' - October, 19h7 Weather Conditions. Unseasonably hot weather continued into early October (104° F. at Parker Dam on the 4th), ending temporatly with a rain-and-wind storm on the 11th and 12th. Most of the remainder of the month was delight- ful, with clear; warm days and fine cool nights. The temperature reached 100° at Parker Dam on the 19th! Phenological Data. Havasu Lake levels varied from hh8.10 on the 5th to hh6.63 on the 17th (top level, h50.00). Senecio in bloom in Bill Williams Delta on 13th. [illegible] Zampborata and Baccharis sp. still in heavy bloom above Topock on 21st. Chrysotnannus paniculatus in full lbom at Chemehuevis Wash north of Vidal Junction on 25th. Highlights of Bird Records.- 1 Common Loon seen on 2nd, 2 on 6th, all on Havasu Lake. Eared Grebes quite common; more than h00 seen in Bill Williams arm of Havasu Lake on 23rd. Least Grebe again observed at Headgate Rock Dam: 1 each on 8th and 9th. Migrating flock of h8 Snowy Egrets seen above Topock on 25th. Very few Black-crowned Night Herons noted. 1 American Bittern seen near Beal on 2nd, another on Havasu Lake (across from Pittsburg Point) on the 8th. Last Wood Ibis, 1 in Bill Williams Delta on the 13th. Last White-faced Glossy Ibis, 1 above Topock on the 15th. First Canada Goose, 1 above Topock on 12th; a few (less than 100) seen later in month. The good flight of White-fronted Goose continued, the last noted being 2 above Topock on 11th. 5 Lesser Snow Geese were seen about 1½ miles below Topock on 6th; 1 above Topock on 26th. General Duck population about the same as last year. Last Cinnamon Teal, 2 at Beal Lake on 25th. First Ring-necked Ducks, 5 on Havasu Lake on 6th. First Lesser Scaup Ducks, 7 in Bill Williams arm of Havasu Lake on 23rd. First Bufflehead, 1 at Beal Lake on 25th. First Red-breasted Merganser, 1 on Havasu Lake on 30th. Apparently no wintering Osprey; last seen, 1 at Havasu Lake on 8th. 1 Duck Hawk in Bill Williams Delta on 13th. 1 Prairie Falcon above Topock on 15th. 1 Pigeon Hawk above Topock on 12th, 1 at Parker on 21st. Coot population somewhat in excess of last year's, with about 3,000 at Beal Lake, and at least h,500 on Havasu Lake. 1 Black-bellied Flower in Bill Williams Delta on 13th. Last Pectoral Sandpiper, 1 in Bill Williams Delta on 13th. No Black-necked Stilts seen during month. Last Northern Phalaropes, 9 in Bill Williams Delta on 13th. 1 Parasitic Jaeger collected in Bill Williams Delta on 13th. 1 Frank- lin Gull seen on Havasu Lake on 2nd. 2 Bonsparte Gulls seen in Bill Will- iams arm of Havasu Lake on 23rd. Last Forster Tern, 1 on Havasu Lake on 8th. Last Caspian Terns, h at Topock on 1st. 1 Screech Owl heard, Arizonas side above Needles, night of 1st. 1 Nighthawk (species?) seen above Topock on 25th.
