March 21, 1947, N. Foothills of Plomosa Mtns. 9 mi. SW of Bouse, 0905-1115 MST. Sparrow Hawk - 1 male - lit on side of Sahuaro Cactus, at a neat hole. Gambell Quail - 3 seen. Black-chinned Hummingbird - 1 seen. Costa Hummingbird - 2 - one giving flight song. Mearn's Gilded Flicker (Colaptes chrysoides mearnsi) - 2 pair seen in Ironwood and Sahuaro cactus. Gila Woodpecker Ladderback Woodpecker - 1 male Ash-throated Flycatcher - 25-30 in the area. Calling varied notes. Watched two courting, and flying to a hole in a Sahuaro. Verdin - several heard. Various call notes still fool me! House Wren - one in dry wash. Rock Wren - just 1 seen for a moment. Cactus Wren - deep gutteral warble from the top of a sahuaro cactus. Mockingbirds - 10-12 singing in the area. LeConte's Thrasher - 2 seen for a short time on Ocotillo. No nest found. In a wash. Crissal Thrasher (Toxostoma dorsale dorsale). Flushed a pair of them. Larger and darker than the LeContes, but with curved bill. Found nest at 41/2 feet on the west half side of Lycium andersoni (as the LeConte's nest along the road). Adjacent to the west was a large Palo Verde, as with the Leconte's too. Nest of small dry twigs and fibers. Lining of grass pulp, etc. Inside dia. 41/2"; inside depth 21/4"; outside diameter 7" to 8", and quite bulky. Two young were in the nest. 23/4" to 25/2" long. Skin black. Downy plumes gray. No pin feathers yet. Gape white; Bill and legs blue-black. Eyes still shut. 4-5 days old, I'd guess. No dirt in nest. Parents came to the nest when we left it, and were fairly close all the time. A record for Arizona! Sage Thrasher - 1 pair with female Phainopepla in top of Ironwood tree. Plumbeous Gnatcatcher - several seen and more heard, along wash areas. Phainopeplas Desert Sparrows - 15-20. Head and neck pattern beautiful. A beautiful, light, lilting song, too. Gambel Sparrow - several Lincoln's Sparrow - 1 seen. March 21, 1947, Earp to Vidal Jct. Nice view of it beside the hiway. - 8 Vultures in Ironwood NE of Desert Center. 3 Shrikes, too.
