March 20, 1947, Colorado R. Indian Reservation, Parker to Duck Slough, 12 miles WSE of Parker, Ariz. 0835-0915, and 1030-1110 MST, Arizona. Blue Heron - 2 with nests in tall cottonwoods - used nest lastyear. Common Egret - 2 Sparrow Hawks - 5 Red tail Hawk - 1 perched near new nest in tall, dead cottonwood. Vulture - 9 Gambell Quail - 4 at edge of arrowweed in dirt field. Killdeer - 45 ) Wilson Snipe - 18 )all in one small irrigated pasture by the hiway. Least Sandpiper s - 4 ) Mourning Dove - 7 and 200& in one field with Redwings, Brewer's, etc. Costa Hummingbird - on wire line. Red-shafted Flicker - 2 Gila Woodpecker - 2 Say's Phoebe - 3 - most on wire lines along the road. Ash-throated Flycatcher - 4 Vermilion Flycatcher - 1 male on top of mesquite and sallying forth. Raven - (2 pair). House Wren - 1 scolding. Verdin - 1 on wire line. W. Mockingbird - 4 - gave varied songs. Sage Thrasher - 2 in top of Screwbean. Curved bill, short. Gray-brown and streaked below. Roadrunner - 2 crossing road, slowly, pausing at edge. 1st one seen was on a fence post and did not fly for a moment. Glided to the ground, ran, and flew to telephone pole crossarm at 20 feet height. Opened its bill and gave its "rattle" notes. Crest flexed now and then. White and red patched on head behind eye plainly seen. Whole body streaked brown. Tail dark brown or black. It was very obliging, and did not fly when we squeaked, whistled, waved, or pounded on the car, nor until Gale got within 8 or 10 feet of the pole !! Phainopeplas - 44 seen, usually M & F near each other. None seen until in area where Phoradendron californicum Nutt. was found. Loggerhead Shrikes - 1's and 2's on wire lines- 5. W. Meadowlarks Sonoran Redwings Brewer Blackbirds - 3 & 30& Common D warf Cowbird - 7 Abert Towhees - 1 - 2 - 1 heard - 1- 3-2 Gambell Sparrows - 1 - 3. March 20, 1947, Colorado R. Indian Reservation Duck Slough, 12 mi WSW of Parker Arizona (near the River). 0915-1030 MST. Double-crested Cormorant - 2 Blue Herons - several Gadwalls - about 30 M & F on the slough Baldpates - 2 M and 3 F. Green-wing Teal - 75-100 present. M & F. Males are beauties now. Cinnamon Teal - over 50 M and F present. Males are strikingly colored. Lesser Scaup - 1 female Redtail Hawk - soaring with Harris Hawk_ Turkey Vulture - circled low over us. Harris Hawk - Watched on perched in tree. Flushed as we approached and circled up to nearly 2000' and then another, the mate, before not seen, took off and circled up the same "cylinder" but not quite so high, and took off after the 1st hawk, to the north, and then, out of nowhere, came a 3rd one high and followed the other two. Field markings were visible up to a 1/2 mile away, at least. The bird is generally a sooty black color with a white-tip tail, and a wide white band at the base of the tail, above and below. A coppery tint showed on the upper and reddish brown on the lower surface of the wings. Tips deeply fingered, and wings had a rather "shaggy" appearance.
