January 29, 1947, MacFadden's 12-mile Swamp. 1300-1445 PST, 6 OVC,R-, SL5-20 Canada Geese - few scattered in with Lesser Canada Geese in a flock of 3000?, Took off from north end of swamp in a mass, and split into 2 groups, one heading NW, while the other circled and landed in field east of swamp, near the Hiway. Flushed them back and forth. Mallards - 9 M and 9 F. Gadwall - 6, in center of the pond. Pintail - pretty close to 1000 of them, equally M & F, in the grass and shallow water at north end of the swamp, flushed, circled and landed again farther on. Green-winged Teal - 30 mixed in with the Pintails. (Where'd the 100's go?) Blue-winged Teal - took off from center of swamp, and went into south end of swamp, as they did Jan. 14th. Shoveller -- 3 F and 2 M, the rest must have moved on. Killdeer Wilson's Snipe - 4 flew into field next to swamp. Flushed 5 others one at a time. Coot - 41 is all that were seen. Tule Wren - a couple or so along the road through the swamp. Robins Pipits - several flew over. Audubon Warblers - working the ash trees, in a small flock. Redwings - none seen. On Jan. 16th Dumas and party were there at 3 p.m., and no Redwings were present, but a large band came in while ?/?/?? they were there. On the 21st, Dave and I were there late and the swamp was full of them. Today, early in the afternoon there were none. Where do they spend the day? Song Sparrows. Feb. 1, 1947, Calapooya R., Limb C., Oak-pasture, 8-11 a.m., R - 40°SSW1/4, 10 ⚬ Mallards - about 15 on small ponds Green-winged Teal - 3 seen. Flushed easily. Killdeer - flying around short thing calling. Br. Bluetts - Flickers - some feeding on the ground Robins - Flight of 20-25 came in from the SW. Stowder - 7 + 9 in tree bush clumps. Juncos - over 100 feeding on the ground on dumped grain White-corn Sparrows - several in snowberry, rose since two. Song Sparrows - a few. Feb. 1, 1947 - Owl Creek - Fir Woods. Flickers - 7 working open ground between trees. Varied Thrush - 15 working under hazelbrush & fir. R.C. Kinglet - 2 or 3 working thru hazel Pine Siskins - several in firs Feb. 2, 1947 - N.
