January 27, 1947, Jack's Bridge, Butte Creek 1230-330 p.m. Ø/ 40°F. Hungarian Partridge - just 1 seen at the edge of the woods. Bob Whites - 9 of them flushed from fence row near the creek, and they flew across Flickers - 4 of them flying to and from an isolated oak tree in a walnut orchard. Pileated Woodpecker - 1 seen in the deeper fir woods. It did not call. Lewis Woodpecker - 1 in oak at edge of fir woods. Caught insects in the air. Water Ouzel - 1 scolding as it flew around me downstream. Varied Thrush - 37 of them feeding on rotting walnuts among molding leaves in the orchard. They were actually pecking through rotting shell. Ruby-crowned Kinglet - seen now and then. Pine Siskins, 225-230 of them busily and noisilily feeding on Alder "cones" of a large Alder tree growing at the edge of the creek. They paid no attention to my presence, and allowed close approach to those on the lower branches. Towhees - Males and females seen here and there. Juncos Song Sparrow - singing from a 6' perch in a hazel bush. January 27, 1947, Oak Knoll and Vale between Thomas Sch & Rockie 4-Corners. 330 to 5 p.m. Cooper Hawk - perched in top of oak overlooking a field. Sparrow Hawk - carrying small mouse from field. N. Spotted Owl - Attracted to a clump of fir by a "hoot, hoot-hoot (joined)". I found it perched high in one of the firs. It was barred and spotted below, and the undertail was light and barred some. Long-tailed Jay - one quietly perched on top of tall oak. Oregon Chickadees - 2 pecking open "balls" attached to limbs, apparently eating the contents of the "balls", and I approached with 3' of them while they pecked. Slender-billed Nuthatch - working oaks in the area. Varied Thrush - scattered individuals seen. Pipits - 38 in one field nearby. Brewer Blackbirds - here and there in flocks of 7 to 30. Not feeding, but waiting. January 28, 1947 - Hubbard Mineral Springs - 8-1030 a.m. OVC/65% 35°F. Stellar Jay - scolding from the deeper fir woods. Winter Wrens - in the vines and brush of a logged over area. Scolded me only when I came within 4 or 5 feet of them. Ruby-crowned Kinglet - here and there inthe brush. Golden-crowned Kinglet - in flocks of 10 to 20 working through the fir. Fox Sparrow - just one seen in the brush. Song Sparrow - Several in the brush of the logged off area. January 28, 1947 - Pudding River, near Coney Island. 1030 to 12 noon. Not a single bird was seen in all this time.
