Jan. 23, 1947 - Stewart Lake, 11 a.m. Common Snipe - 17 flushed from flooded grain field. Killdeer - 2 with them. Mallards - 15-20 (100?) present. S pintail - 7 (3F+4f) present Shoveller - 2 F so all I saw. Green-winged Teal - About 150 on the lake this a.m. Very wary. Flew away, while all other ducks stayed on the water. January 25, 1947, Eckman Slough Waldport, Oregon, 10 a.m. 30vc/SW25/43oF. R&. Farallon Cormorants - a few on the bay and river. Canvasbacks - Two bunches of 6M & 4F, and 4M & 2F. After taking off, legs hand awkwardly for some time. Lesser Scaups - one pair on the river. Bufflehead - l pair. Male in full plumage. Red-breasted Mergansers - 1 pair seen. White-winged Scoters - the only ones seen. Common. Killdeer - 2 were flying and c alling in all this storm. California Gulls - several seen. Song Sparrows - one pair at the edge of the bay in the grass. One was going through a "quivering" action such as I have witnessed in some mating birds. January 25, 1947, Lint Slough, Waldport, 11 a.m. Weather as above. Loon - ??? - Red-throated or Pacific Loon. We couldn't determing it. In diving it does not rise out of water as do the Cormorants. It just s eems to slip downward as it goes forward. It spent much more time submerged than on top. Red-breasted Mergansers - 3 were seen. Quite brillian plumage. Males. Kingfisher - just one flew along the slough. Golden-crowned Kinglets - working the fir woods bordering the slough. January 25, 1947, Yachats River and Bay, 12 a.m. Weather as above. Harlequin Duck - not abundant, for we saw only 2 or 3 off shore. 2M and 1F. White-winged Scoter - a few off shore. California Gulls - standing in scattered flock on sand bar in the bay, and shifting with the small changes in wind direction, taking advantage of what "air pockets" they could find. An example of a response to a micro-environment demand. Golden-crowned Kinglet - working through spruce and pine at edge of the ocean. January 25, 1947, Yaquina Bay, south Side, Newport, Oregon l-230 p.m. same weather. Farallon Cormorants - quite a few seen in the water and flying up and down the bay. Canvasbacks - a few seen. Mostly males. Lesser Scaups - a flock of 10 seen at edge of the bay. White-winged Scoters - about 8 of them out on the sand, some 15 feet from the edge of the water. Perched on wood debris, or just on the sand. Just seemed to be resting. Didn't pay much attention to us. When we flushed them, they got up and "ran" on the sand, as they would on the water, and took off in a distance of about 15 feet. (helped by the 25-30 mile winds today). All took off quartering into the wind, although not all facing that way then flushed. This is the first time I have seen them out of water, on land. California Gulls and immatures - a flock of around 500 standing on a sanding point in the bay, semi-shelter from the strong SW winds. January 25, 1947, Yaquina River, Toledo Oregon 4 p.m. A flock of 12 Lesser Scaups on the river, very near the highway.
