Jan. 11, 1947 - Corvallis, 1 - 4 p.m. Avery Parks around river trail + up 2 loops above park. 1-2 p.m. No birds in the park. 1 Ruby-crown Kinglet working hazel brush & of the park 1 ? American Merganser in sandy pocket off the main prives. When we flushed it, it used up 55'-60' of water for its takeoff, & then flew only 100 feet or so further on before it banked into another cove for a landing. Brooke Lane, Rogue's River - 2-3 p.m. Many Flickers Towhee Song Sparrow Flock of 10-15 Western Bluebirds 1 Long-tailed Jay in brush. Robin S. Cemetery Hill 3-4 p.m. 2 Red-breasted Nuthatch Flock of Juncos in hazel-junior-oak brush. January 14, 1947, 12-mile Swamp, Benton Co., Noon to 2:30 p.m. 20 Ø, N6, 35ºF. 9 Lesser Canada Geese at north end, got up in flocks of 2 and 7. Flew NW. 100+ Mallards, about equally M & F. Baldpates - heard by Dave Marshall, but not seen. 5 Pintails - 2 M in full plumage, and 3F. On water and in flight. One male sailing along on the water with its head pulled clear in. 500+ Green-winged Teal - Large bands of them at the north end of the lake, with Coots, Geese, and Shovellers. 3 Bluewinged Teal - 1 M & 2F. This small group of 3 flew by at 50 yards, and from all appearances, the one male could be nothing else. It is question- able inasmuch as this is out of season for any migrants. 40-45 Shovellers - About 30M to 15F,(or juveniles) One flight of 9M & 5F went over. The males had as brilliant and beautiful a plumage as I have ever seen on them. Ring-neck or Lesser Scaup - I thought I saw a flight of 4 or 5 land in a part of the swamp on the far side, but nothing further was seen of them. W. Red-tailed Hawk - west of the swamp area. Amer. Rough-legged Hawk, a hawk thought to be this, and definitely not a Redtail, circling quite high, at the north end of the swamp. 100+ American Coots - in small and large bunches. One of 32 counted. Killdeer - now and then one would fly over. Tule Wren - we heard and saw about 4 of them, and we didn't hit all the swamp. Hermit Thrush - on a 1/2-submerged log in Muddy Creek. Grayish sides showed well. Ruby-crowned Kinglet - seemed to be individuals here and there. Audubon Warbler - in the ash trees, and on the vegetation over the water a few 's. American Pipits - a flock of 7 flew over - strung out about 50' apart. Purple Finch - a couple flew over. Towhee - in the ash and rose scrub at the edge of the swamp. Song sparrow - common everywhere in the brush. Jan. 14, 1947 - 12-mile Swamp to Peoria Ferry: 2:30 to 3 p.m. 20 Ø/ N 4. Mallards on ponds, Killdeer in fields, Flickers, Varied Thrush, Savannah Sparrows and Juncos. Jan. 14, 1947 - 1/4 Peoria Ferry, Benton Co. 3 to 4:15 p.m. Clear and cold. Blue Heron flushed and it crocked a lot. Kingfisher on slough, did not rattle when flushed. Flicker, Harris Woodpecker, working poplar at about 60'. Oregon Chickadee, Slender-billed Nuthatch, R. C. Kinglet, Audubon Warblers, House Finch (callby Marshall), several in poplars, White-crowned and Golden Crowned Sparrows in a mixed flock in fence row - mostly whites. Fox Sparrows.
