September 17, 1946, Avery Park, 0800 to 0930. Part. cloudy, cool, east f ing/ wind. Heavy rains, overcast, thunder, etc., the past few days. Cooper Hawk - one flew through the trees fast and directly, heading east. Not pursuing. Ring-necked Pheasants - one young rooster and hen flushed along road into the park. Kildeer - Kingfisher - 2 or 3 seen this a.m. perched on limbs over the river. Gave rattle while in flight, and also while perched on the snags. Flicker - one feeding on the ground, scratching among maple leaves. Gairdner Woodpecker - Red-breasted Sapsucker - I watched one adult visit 4 different trees within 3 minutes. The distance covered was about 200 yards. Some pecking was done at each of them. I also observed 5 young birds, just getting their adult plumage. Oh, the adult lit on the trunk of each tree at a height of about 18-20 feet. These young birds were continually bickering and churring to each other, and all stuck pretty close together. If one went to another tree, the others soon grouped there, also. They would try to chase each other off the perch, and thereby occupy that perch. No one individual seemed to dominate the others. They each gave way for the other. Besides hanging on the trunks, they also perched on horizontal limbs, or even hung upside down, like a chickadee or nuthatch, from a cluster of Big- leaf maple samaras. Wood Pewee - two or three of them were seen perched in the tree tops. Two of them sang from their perches. They chased each other, too. Violet-green Swallow - I saw one fly over the river. It appeared immature. Long-tailed Jay - Several in the woods. Out in an open field beside the park, I came upon 7 of them feeding on the ground. All had the plumage very bright, althought they must have been young birds. They flew into one large maple as I approached. Oregon Chickadee - White-breasted Nuthatch - in company with the chickadees. Red-breasted Nuthatch - seen alonge in another part of the woods. Robin - several seen in town, and a small flock of 15 or so in the park. Cedar Waxwings - quite a few small flocks seen here and there at the park, and in town. Audubon Warblers - one pair chasing each other through the trees. Lutescent Warbler - saw two moving rapidly through the trees. Cassin Vireo - a few still giving call notes from the trees in the park. W. Meadowlark ♀ one immature flushed from the ground beside the road. Others singing from fence posts nearby. Brewer Blackbird - a flock of 7 ilew high, heading east. W. Tanager - I thought I heard the call notes just once. Did not see the bird for it was across the river. Oregon Towhee ♂ preening at 6" over a 3' high clump of berry vines, on a twig. Junco - Song Sparrow - Several singing at about a four-foot height. Grass cover 2 feet high.
