25 August, 1946, Avery Park, and South Cemetery Hill, Corvallis. 9 to 11 a.m. Quite cool this a.m., but warmed up by 10 a.m. Clear. Mallard Vulture - just a couple of them Cooper Hawk, one along Oak Creek American Rough-legged Hawk, saw this one sitting on a snag over the Mary's River with Chickadees working the same tree, and under it was an Anthony's Green Heron perched on a log at the edge of the water. Soon the hawk flew downstream, and immediately after, the heron took off upstream. It must have been scared to death. Sparrow Hawk - just one young one perched on a pole. Ruffed Grouse - flock of young in the woods south of the park. Valley Quail - saw a covey of these along Brook Lane Pheasant - just a few this a.m. Killdeer - flew over the park - two of them. Mourning Loves - very few this a.m. Pacific Nighthawk - 3 flying over in formation. Vaux's Swift - 4 or 5 of them working the area over a patch of oak woods. Rufous Hummingbird- W. Beltea Kingfisher - two or three along the Mary's R., Flicker - adults and young of the year common. There favorite perch was a short limb high on a tall fir, in the sun, where they were usually preening. N. Red-breasted Sapsucker - 5 young birds working the trunk of a Big-leaf Maple. They kept chasing each other, and were very noisy about the whole thing. Harris Woodpecker - Saw just one in the fir timber. Little Flycatcher - adults and young very numerous. Olive-sided Flycatcher - one adult and 3 young were seen. Violet-green Swallow - many seen, some in large groups of up to 100 flocked on wire lines, as if getting ready for the southward migration. Cliff Swallows - quite a few seen over some nearby fields. Stellar Jay - two of them seen. Long-tailed Jay - a few were seen. W. Crow - Oregon Chickadee - common Slender-billed Nuthatch. California Creeper - two were seen. Seattle Wren - a few Robin - young and adults plentiful. Russet-backed Thrush- just one was heard. Golden-crowned Kinglet - one small flock came roving through the trees. Cedar Waxwings - common. Cassin's Vireo - several were seen and heard. Warbling Vireo - just two were seen all morning. Lutescent Warbler - 3 of these orange-crowns were seen. Yellow Warbler - just 2 adults and 1 young were seen. Black-throated Gray Warbler - two adults, and two young without black throat. Long-tailed Chat - two were seen in a thicket near the river. Pileolated Warbler - Adults and a young were seen. The young had the black cap but it was a light gray-white below. No yellow was seen. English Sparrow W. Meadowlark - common early in the morning, but not by 10 a.m. Brewer Blackbird - a few were seen. Western Tanager - one male was seen. Black-headed Grosbeaks- adults and young were very numerous in the park. The orange-brown belly showed up well on most of them. Calif. Purple Finch - two adults and 5 young Willow Goldfinch - adults and young present. Oregon Towhee Oregon Junco Puget-sound Sparrow Song Sparrow. 51 species total
